About Kapoho Tide pools.....

EPA Superfund site? <gag> <barf>
Reminds me of the time a certain (un-named) band bus "let go" over one of Chicago's open web bridges to a boat load of tourists on the canal below.....

to be fair, is the situation at kapoho any different than any other shoreline recreation areas in hawaii? I do not think so.

Come on eightfingers; unless the band was the "Guess Who", you owe it to us to "finger" them.

This may belong over on the election forum, but here goes anyway. Puna has been shortchanged by the State and County for decades when it comes to facilities (in this case sanitary) at our very few ocean swimming access points. The only one I know of with adequate such facilities is Isaac Hale, and that has only recently been upgraded to a decent standard. Kehena Beach, the Waiopae (sp.) tide pools, and Champagne Pond remain heavily used and have absolutely no public sanitary arrangements whatsoever. There was a brief period several years ago when some portapotties were at Waiopae, but they didn't stay there long.

Councilwoman Naeole, to her credit, has written repeatedly to the state authorities concerning this, but has been given the cold shoulder. Since most of the locations in question are state property, she has no other recourse. I have not heard of any effort on the part of State Representative Hanohano in this regard, but I might have missed it since she seems to keep a low profile.

So in the end, it's political. In the meantime the more responsible among us will just have to do our business before and after going there. That is, if we're not so grossed out that we just stay away.

Cheers,
Jerry

Jerry, thank you for your info!

There were porta-luas there last summer, because I lived there through the end of last July and they were definitely there and functioning. I left that period when Flossie almost hit us and haven't been since, so I don't know since that time.
