A few thoughts on "sustainability."

Here is the way I see it.
Think of your land as a solar / rain collector.
If you will set up multiple carbon/nitrogen cycles you can reap great amounts of energy in the form of protean, fats and carbs laced with abundant enzymes and vitamins and minerals.

But where folks make their first mistake is not building their systems on fodder and compost.

When you get multiple systems working every things starts serving multiple functions, i.e. compost fodder and insect feed your poultry and goats and rabbits. your animals provide meats, fats, eggs.
You return that back into the loop as does your animals in the form of compost which feeds your vegetables and more fodder.

You can take this to such a level where you would never have to leave your land.

but with out the textiles and some materials that extended society provides it would be a hard existence.

But if you are industrious you can trade for many of those things.

But at the end of the day everything has trade offs.

Absolutely, and this is why I'm in Hawaii, because the land itself is very "fat" and never sleeps from growing. It makes the whole game vastly easier than it might be in the back woods of Vermont.
