So you think ‘Punaweb” represents Puna’s voice…
#1
…during this year's upcoming election?

Think again…

Here are some statistics:

The population of Puna, based on year 2000 statistics, is over 31,000 with well over 14,000 registered voters.

According to Punaweb statistics, there are roughly 1505 members who have posted on this site at one time or another.

Only about 13% or roughly 195 of those members have posted on this site since the end of June.

Let’s narrow this down a bit further.

In this 2008 Big Island Elections section of Punaweb there have been roughly 33 posts authored by roughly 15 different people. These posts have been responded and re-responded to; by roughly 44 people, including the 15 original authors. Note also that 5 or so of these 44 people are actually running for office or directly support the candidate running for office. I shouldn’t include this 11% of the 44 people posting...but I will anyway.

So…these 44 people posting in this 2008 Big Island Elections section represent only .3% of the population of Puna’s registered voters. Yes…that right, less than one third of one percent!

Sounds pretty insignificant to me!

It really surprises me how [^] some of you, and you know who you are, can be to think that you represent the “Voice of Puna!”[?]

I’ll give you an example of what I mean. Just because one mayoral candidate had nothing better to do on August 16th than to show up at a debate at the Akebono Theater, you think he is Puna’s best choice for Mayor. Or is it because you are voting for him already anyway? Come on…stop kidding yourself because you’re not kidding me.

We already had a “Meeting of the Mayoral Candidates”, late May in Kea’au. Most of us already have already gotten behind our candidate of choice. Let’s move on…

Interesting. I hadn't heard the phrase "Voice of Puna" before.

Did you just make that up yourself?

Anyway, welcome to Punaweb.

Thanks for the welcome!

My opinion on this started with a quote from someone to the effect of...

"This should give us some indication of who thinks the voters of Puna are worthy of full inclusion in the political process."

I'm in Puna, I went to see the Mayoral meeting in Kea'au; I know I'm worthy already and have gone out to support my candidate. The political process isn't always in Puna, it's in ourselves!

Well willpahoa I can only say that the quote which caught your attention is the expressed opinion of that person who has the same basic right to say it as you do.

Our front page slogan however is "Got something to say? Try the punaweb forum"... which it appears you have taken us up on.

I think that your "Voice of Puna" phrase might be attached to the Puna News. Not completely sure.

Regarding Punafish's concerns about trolling i think I will stick to my policy of Assume the best and ask questions.

P.S. The mayoral debate in Keaau was really well done. My complements to Frank Commendador and crew for putting on such a good debate.

Not sure what is meant by trolling...if trolling means I'm related in any way to the Puna News. I'm not.

"Trolls" and "trolling" are internet terms for people who traverse the internet visiting public forums such as this one and dropping verbal bombs in hope of creating entertainment for themselves.

This has happened here before.

willpahoa, let me ask you a qustion since you seem to have statistics at your fingertips...

How many people in Puna voted in the last election?

So you think ‘Punaweb” represents Puna’s voice…

Can you think of another message board that would represent Puna's voice better? In no way, no how, has anyone I heard of actually say that statement.

Punaweb is the only board I participate in Puna because of the people that participate here, whether they are from Puna or not.

Welcome to PW. Hope you stick around. We could use some more educated people on board.

Hey Will,

Welcome.. I would like to point out one thing to you. The numbers you posted about PW might be a little skewed in that many people come here and lurk in the shadows, only reading the forums. They may or may not post.. ever.

I know it's private but would you like to, in the annonimity(sp) of your screen name, stump for your candidate? i'm sure he or she would appreciate your sharing your thoughts with us if you promote their ideas and/or platform correctly.

Blessings,
dave
