Speed traps on Hwy 130
On 130, to control speed and create breaks in the traffic flow for left turners and as a temporary bridge between the mess that is current and where we want to be in the future, what about timed metering lights, not at intersections, with photo ticketing capabilities? Perhaps two or three pair?

I agree Beach boy - driving with Aloha is just not about driving slower but it is also taking a second to pull over and let the clump of traffic pass if you want to drive slow. Think of it as letting the person with 2 items go ahead of you with the full shopping cart in the grocery line.

It also means on busy mornings to pull over into the right hand lane in town and not go slow in the "fast" lane.

The basic tenet of road safety is to do what is safe not just what is legal. If you want to do the minimum speed, do it. But also remember that not every one does, so YOU may cause traffic accidents because of your right to drive slow. So be defensive and pull over and let the faster cars pass you safely.

Dan, We've often thought that a timed metering light is just what's needed to teach people *how to merge* at that spot in Kea'au where it crunches down to 1 lane. One from this lane, one from that - eventually everyone would get the idea.

But if you're going the speed limit, 45 mph or 55 mph, it's not that easy to just pull over. I don't consider 55 mph a safe pull over speed on roads with dirt shoulders. I would have to slow down to pull over, thus enraging everyone and puzzling not a few.

If I'm going the max speed limit on the island, and someone is tailgating me, I DO want them to pass me and will watch for a chance to facilitate that, like if I see there's room ahead to pass I get in the right of my lane and slow enough to make the pass quick and easy.

But I draw the line at endangering myself by pulling off the road at the max speed.

I didnt say pull over at the max speed and endanger yourself. Please reread my post.

There are areas on Hwy 130 where there is plenty of shoulder paved to pull to the right and let the faster traffic pass if you decide to do 35mph in a 55 zone. When the highway goes to two lanes in one direction between 6 AM and 8 AM, if you are going slower than the flow of traffic stay to the right lane.

People do this all the time at the Kapoho/Pahoa signal as they turn right. The big trucks will stay to the far right so that the faster cars have time to pass them. You make sure the truck sees you and they usually wave you on past them.

I was NOT advocating doing something stupid like pulling over doing 55 onto gravel. What I am advocating is thinking and paying attention when your speed is well below the flow of traffic.

What state is it that if you have 5 cars stacked up behind you, you are required to alleviate the problem by switching to a right lane or pulling over?

That would be California, but I never heard of it being enforced, and never seen it obeyed except by my grandmother.

I used to live in Washington State. The rural 2-lane highways there have turnouts every few miles. Slow drivers with 5 or more cars behind them are required to pull off at these turnouts to let faster drivers by. I think they should do that here.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Angel Pilago did weigh in with his response to the H-130 project and it sounds like a winner if you ask me.
