Just a short addition to Kathy's posting, you can only challenge the tax assessment during a short period of time after you received you assessment notice.

In my case, when I purchased the house the previous owners had the new tax assessment letter. The previous owners suggested I challenge the amount since it was around $50,000 higher than the price I just paid. I called the assessment office and they instructed me on what paperwork to fill out (I got the forms on the web). I filled out the paperwork and sent it in. The assessment office also said they would check my claim against the sales records. A few weeks later I got a letter stating they accepted the new amount.

I purchased my land for about $30,000 below assessed value. The taxes were reduced automatically about 2 months after the deed was recorded. I didn't have to do anything.

That had nothing to do with your purchase since Hawaii does not use the sales data for assessment. You probably purchased your lot two months before they were doing the annual assessments.

Thanks Stillhope, We haven't seen ours and were just wondering. We purchased in Dec. So I guess its time to ask the state where it is.

Don't waste your time by asking. Haven't you heard of the scandals at the Bureau of Conveyences?! The clients of "preferred" title and escrow companies, law firms, etc. (ie. the ones that know how to greese the wheels and pad the pockets) get their stuff recorded first. I had a POA recorded with a sale and it took a year to get the original back!

John; No unfortunately, I hadn't heard. We bought our lot in Dec. and we got the tax notice just fine, but we were wondering when the deed might show up. I was going to call tomorrow, So you saved me the cost of a long distance call. Guess we'll just wait some more, since if anyone would know at what glacial pace the Recorder moves, it would be you.
