Aloha!
Trying to mail packages and have regular mail forwarded to "General Delivery". We will be living in HPP at the end of MaKuu Drive - called Pahoa post office (seems closer and an easier drive) but they said "You have to use Keaau!". [V]
I was under the impression that I could use any Post Office - even Hilo if I wanted.
Anybody have any information one way or the other? [?]

usually post offices are full, no boxes available. you can be on a wait list at any post office you want. friends waited quite some time buy keaau opened some new boxes thats why they suggested that.

I thought the post office was required to accept "general delivery" for someone not able to obtain a mailbox? Is that the Pahoa post offices way of saying we're understaffed and overcrowded?
I think Keaau Post Office is just as swamped as Pahoa's so anyone telling you to try Keaau P.O. is just trying to past the buck.

What's the zip of the boxes in HPP? I think that's the Post Office the subdivision residents would be required to use for general delivery.

We live in HPP near the end of Makuu and have found Keaau to be much more convenient, being on the way to Hilo (Walmart, KTA etc).

HPP is in the Keaau zipcode 96749...Pahoa PO is SOOOO CROWDED! The Feds have cut and cut and cut the planned new Pahoa post office building (wars do cost money) ever since the GOP regained the White House. Now it is totally out of the budget, after having been in the top 5 fed building priorities in this state for several years.
Also, HPP has free mail delivery and mail boxes for its residents. My friends who live on Road 6 in HPP have never complained about their mail service in the 25 years I've known them and believe me, their friends would hear about it if it was a problem. Have you checked with the HPP office?

Aloha, Frankie. The last time I checked, the waiting list for one of the HPP boxes was way over a year. The HPPOA is trying to get more boxes installed, but they have run into issues with easements for new locations. The current ones are too close to the roads and have actually caused car accidents. (I witnessed one.) Unfortunately, the HPPOA is not moving on resolving this as fast as most residents would like. Even a huge centralized bank of boxes at the hui hale (where there is no easement issue) would be better than driving all the way into town for most people. Maybe someone on the Board knows more about this and can correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how it looks to me.
Cheers,
Jerry
