Who is Melissa Slagle? Looks like she's been doing some cutting and pasting.

The main part, it seems, was written in 2004 (when Iron Jawed Angels was released)
but someone has added the warning against "Change for the sake of change only ". Even I got that reference!

Oh sorry, I was hoping my comments were construed as supporting and defending fundamental rights and personal liberty.

The 1st 10 amendments were added prior to the constitution being adopted because the constitution did not have enough protections for individual liberty.

The only amendment that I don’t agree with is the 18th (which took away liberty) but I love the 21st (which gave it back)

By the way, referencing two points made in a thread is not hi-jacking.

You know running a blog like this in China is illegal and would get ya sent to a Laogai.

I cherish a woman’s right to vote, work, own land and blog etc. in fact I will gladly charge an enemy beach head to defend our freedoms and constitution.

At the time the Bill of Rights was approved it did not give everyone those rights.... it just gave a chosen minority those rights. The inclusion of everyone came later and continues...

Its also fortunate that our founding fathers made this country a constitution republic, not a democracy, so that our constitution can protect us from the tyranny of the majority. Which seems to get forgotten entirely to often these election days

The USMC etc are fine institutions, but nothing to do with me being able to read English.

Let's join and agree that everyone should get out there and VOTE, if only to stop the tyranny of the well-organized minority.

Have you ever seen one of those "Ask the man on the street" quizzes?
They will ask folks the simplest questions about matters of state or geography.
The person will most often not know squat.

I'd just as soon that person forget what day it is and not weigh in come Tuesday.

Voting rights, speech, right to bear arms, indeed all of our constitutional rights are very much related, as they are precious to all free men and are enumerated in the same august document.

Which to me, formed the nexus between the 1st, 2nd and the 19th and brought to mind how all rights are sacred and intertwined.

All of our freedoms under the constitution are interdependent, which is why its fortunate that amending the constitution is difficult. Weakening any of them weakens them all. I also wish more people could see that.

Given the ability of modern media to influence and or fabricate the news, I wish it was even more difficult to amend the constitution. Generalizations should be avoided, but it should be obvious that most Puna Weber's are considerably more informed on the state and local issues than the majority of voters who depend on the media for all their information on issues. As Esnap says, listen to some of the exit interviews of voters and you have to be frightened at the lack of knowledge on the issues these people just voted on.

In a thread celebrating the right of women to vote, it is suggested that some people should be discouraged from voting, that others have no idea what they're voting on. Exactly the arguments used against giving women the vote pre-1920.

The constitution would have little value if it wasn't changeable, it was designed to keep up with the times, to reflect changing values and priorities.

PS Women are more likely to vote for stricter gun control. Oh the irony.
