My favorite pet - your story
#61
A few years back, we visited the Keaau Humane Society to give the dogs some treats. We quickly noticed a large white dog... he looked like an older lab mix. On this first meeting, we grew a bit concerned that folks would be reluctant to adopt him due to his age and that he would be put to sleep.

After the 3rd visit, he was still there and we decided to adopt him. We figured that he could spend his later years in a big yard with a playmate (our shepherd mix).

Kiko turned out to be a younger dog - our vet indicated that he was only about 3 years old! [8D] He also was largely an Anatolian shepherd (that explains the distinctive curly tail).

Noel, thanks for the wonderful story! LOL.
The joke was on you.
I bet Kiko told his buddy "The story how I fooled our father".

hey stillhope heres one for you, over the years I have done alot fostering of animals.
I got a call one day from a vet, that was supposed to put down an 10 month old white Boxer, who happened to be deaf.
the women who owned her worked 12 hours a day, and left her in her apartment, with no other animals around,
She couldnt figure out why her Boxer was tearing her house apart. DUH!
Since this vet knows I cant say no to any animal in need, I proptly picked her up.
She was a handful, but determined to make this animal rescueable,I spent 6 months teaching her sign language, she caught on so quickly

Now on to her name I named her Frenchy, since she couldnt hear she substituted taste for hearing, Whether it was you , a window , a door or whatever.
One morning I heard my roomate screaming, almost deafining. when I got to her room, Frenchy had jumped up on the bed, and when my roomate tried to get up frenchy inadvertly knocked my roomate onto the floor, Frenchy took full advantage, she had my roomates hair pinned to the floor with her front feet and was licking my roomates face, Now for those of you not familiar with Boxers their tounge is as wide as it is long, so one lick will clean the entire side of your head,
My roomate was laughing so hard she peed her pants, I couldnt help her at this point because I am on the floor laughing my ass off and couldnt catch my breath,
About 4 weeks later the local t.v news channel came and did a story on Frenchy, This was in Salt lake city utah, they sent the footage to their sister station in philly, Their was a couple that saw the news story, They too had a deaf white boxer that was terminally ill with cancer, They called Channel 5 news in salt lake and for whatever reason the cameraman that shot the story on us happened to answer their phone call(fate works in mysteries ways) The camera man gave them my contact info.
After talking by phone for a couple weeks and e-mailing back-en-forth
I worked a deal with Delta airlines to allow me to have Frenchy in the seat next to me. Delta gave us our seats for free, we did have to fly the red eye, but I got Frenchy to philly and got her adopted, the send me holiday pics of Frenchy dressed up in costumes, (which I dont like) But am glad to know she is happy and well adjusted.
Just thought I would share.

Great great story Lostboystoy. While not all white boxers are deaf, they do have a genetic propensity for deafness.
Our first boxer was a white male, but was hearing.
I know from another forum, a woman on Oahu who has a rescued deaf white female. She taught her sign language as well and has a wonderful dog.

My dog Valentine is featured on the opening page of my website: www.eastbaypotters.com

We lost our 14 year old Golden Retriever to spleen cancer in March and since we knew we would be movin to Hawaii we decided to wait till we get there to get another dog. So, come January we will be in the market to adopt one. Valentine was very depressed when Django died. We all took it hard, but she took it the hardest.

Aloha au i Hawai`i,
devany
