Are the KFC or Burger King Part of the chains or are they franchise?
As as far as the cost of food miles? I don't know how these two companies work, they may be required to receive supplies only from the chain or they might have deals setup locally. If nothing else it opens the door for the local places to step up and shine.

Ultimately, people choose who & what businesses they will support. In Arcata, Palapa's Burritos went out of business and Taco Bell came in. Taco Bell initially did well but after a while they didn't get the support they needed and left. In the big scheme of things BK and KFC don't seem all that different from the already open Subway. I think it's a shame that an independent pharmicist may feel the pinch from Longs and close, sadly it's an all too common occurance in towns across the mainland. Again, people get to choose who they will support and most people will go to where their dollar will stretch the furthest.

Such new businesses are going to come into Puna - the population is just two big to avoid it. While ones such as KFC would not be my choice for new food options, again, that's the way it is - if customers are available, "they will come." What the community can control is location, accounting for traffic and looks. The last one, looks, may be the most important long-term. Are KFC and other going to look exactly like any of thousands of versions in the mainland, including big neon signs? There's maybe still a chance to at least make the "look" of these businesses fit into Hawaiian motifs. Without controlling the look right from the beginning will result in neon strips just like everywhere else in the US.

Aloha olin137,
You are on target as far as I'm concerned. I've been talking to Pahoa Villagers for two years about forming a legal "design district". Honokaa has one, Kona has one.
Without this being done Pahoa will simply have little or no say about incoming development. The business opportunities are needed and appreciated. I, and some others here, do hope that the Village will not become a small pond of neon corporate logos.
I'm not very confident about a design district for Pahoa. No one seems willing to do the work but me and I'm not interested in trying to impose my point of view on the village. It may be a case of 'you snooze, you lose'.

We visited Vermont and stayed in Montpelier for 2 weeks in May, 2007 and, after noticing no fast-food places, asked a few people to confirm what was up. The community had organized and implemented policy to keep such places out. Great variety of local eating places -- quick sandwiches to fine dining. Healthy economy, healthy community, healthy land, and healthy people.
It is about choice and whether we choose to live sustainably or not.
BK and KFC are not about living sustainably.
The Woodlands is the front door to Pahoa -- BK and KFC, with gas pumps, et al, will make it look like, Anytown, USA, until the short-term benefits have been taken out of the community and the long-term costs have been left in the community, and the site is left as a shell (about 8 - 10 years?).

Must not have worked very well, they have a MickyD's and BK right out side of town... plus a Quiznos and Subway in town...
The problem is that you guys don't want them anywhere on the Island. The small towns that block these businesses get away with it because the businesses just moves outside the border of that town. What is the boarder of Pahoa?
From what I see, the KFC and BK will not be "in" Pahoa, they are outside the "cultural District" and on the highway, which is where these kind of businesses should be.

Know all about? no, just live here.
By the way, if you are going to correct "my" spelling, you are going to be very busy.
