Longs, Burger King, KFC... Oh My!
#51
Yep, L&L is not much in Haleiwa also, and worse in Ewa Bch. They're now all seperate franchises mostly Chineese owned. Local folks on the mainland like em because they remind of home, but admit they aint the original.

So is the question for the anti Longs, BK & KFC how to stop them or how to minimize their impact? Just complaining won't really solve the real or perceived problem. For the folks that want to keep Pahoa as "quaint" as Pahoa is, then perhaps it might be about keeping the businesses away from the town center and controlling how they look (or ensuring they aren't readily seen from hwy 130). For those who want to prevent them from being in Pahoa or Puna at all the question might be framed as how to stop them from flourishing. Personally, if someone is making money then I imagine that they will prevail. From fast food to ice, it doesn't matter, someone will provide what someone else is willing to buy. So to those who oppose Longs, BK & KFC opening in Pahoa, how do you propose to organize public opinion against it? This thread is not enough as it's been stated here plenty of times that the folks who peruse this website are but a part of Puna.

Sean,

You assume a lot, using the words "anti" and "stop".

What people are expressing dislike for is the bigger picture, not just about Pahoa or Puna, although this being our home such degradation in our face makes it impossible to ignore.

Stop 'em? Haven't seen any posts here proposing to do that.

It may be that the task at this point is to raise real and legitimate concerns at this early point in time, rather than later.

Maybe the owners will take note and seek some resolution. Maybe they won't.

Traffic -- not just delays but deaths. Ecological destruction. Poor health resulting from diet and higher medical costs as a result. Long-term negative impacts on local investment and local community empowerment. All of these, and more, are legitimate concerns for the proposed commercial development of the the nature it is and at the site it is proposed.

What is to be done? Time will tell.

Meanwhile, the owners would be served notice that not everybody likes our community being used this way and that what is happening is being watched very closely.

Remember way back....
Way back to when we had to drive directly through Keaau and Pahoa?

We complained about the 10+ minutes it took to drive from Pahoa High School to the Pahoa Post office. When school was getting out or about to start, it could take you alot longer to get through town....

Remember when it used to take 15 to 20 minutes to get through Keaau Town on your way to or from Hilo? Sometimes it could take longer, like when school dismissed or if someone had a fender bender...

Then we built the "Pahoa BYPASS" to bypass the business district and create a traffic corridor to Keaau.

This worked so good, we then built the "Keaau BYPASS", to bypass the Keaau business district and get through traffic moving away from the Town Centers, instead of making everyone go directly through it.......

In my eyes... this is where the idea of Puna Town Centers was created.

If you have lived in the area for any amount of time, you should have no problem figuring out where the grocery store is located or any other business your in need of,

It does not have to be on our highway! LOL

Having lived years in a large city I can tell you that local businesses can thrive under any conditions, as long as they are providing a quality goods and services are a fair price. If they don't they fail. The large chains have to compeate in the same market and by the same rules.

as an example, 7-Eleven, I have been to two of them on this island, and will never go back... why... because twice, (once at each store) there were 5 people behind the counted but only one running a register, the first time I saw this I waited 15 min for a line of about 10 people. the second time I put my things on the counter and walked out. The only why these businesses will stay around if people keep going to them.

If KFC, BK or Longs gives bad service or high prices, I wont go to them ether.

I can tell you from experience with KFC's parent company that they are a fare place to work and they seemed to be very concerned about all aspects of the business and employees. That said, KFC chicken is not something I care for, I would rather a Church's Chicken move in.

yo Jon, living in Hawaii, one must have patience. Storming out of a 7/11 is just crazy in Hawaii in my opinion! 'Hang loose' is the expression I believe typifies Hawaiian business, and either you get with it or remain frustrated all the time because I'm sure that is not gonna be your last experience in a negative manner. Seems you got your standards pretty high Jon? Is that because things are done more proficiently in GW Bush land?[Wink]

you are so right there. For me actually the best L & L Drive in was the one on Young St. by the old Police Cell block. They were awesome! Plus I have a soft spot for the original L & L Drive in in Liliha. It's a small hole in the wall, but has tasty food!!

Just out of curiosity, does anyone really WANT this? The job aspect is great but KFC and BK? Anyone have any plans for petitions or a way of blocking this from happening? I'm sure the wheels are well in motion but just wondering what anyone thinks of what we can do to NOT let this happen.

I am pretty sure the owners want this... and the last time I checked this was still the USA, and you can't stop someone from making a legal living just be case you don't like it.

Yeah I know your right Jon. I just don't want to see other local restaurants suffer. But then again, Domino's is closing so we'll see what happens.
