Coffee as a hedge
#21
Mangos are a fairly tall tree, & cacao are fairly short, so not too much growing into....
Glen, if your mango is already fruiting, or fruit bearing sized, then it will most likely always out pace the growth of a just planted cacao....

if the mango isn't yet planted, or still small, then there could be a better chance of the cacao growing into the mango....

Rose beetles will not bite you, but their larvae will bite the leaves (hence exposing that which was to be covered...). An extension article on them, with pictures!:

The story of my mango: I didn't know I had one. There was something at the very end of my driveway that was struggling, surrounded by weeds. Someone told me it was a guava. Very reedy. Thin. I had a guy (Ashley's Tractor -- he did a good job) removes some non-producing trees, haul away some junk in June. He composted the green waste around the mystery tree very carefully in a circle around the trunk. I come in October -- nice green, happy mango tree (identified by those who know). I'd say it is about ten feet tall. It was very strange. Nothing resembling a tree....then suddenly, a tree! I was pretty pleased as I would rather have a mango than a guava, and it is a very pretty, very green tree. I am not sure they actually fruit down in lower HPP, but you never know.

I think I can probably chance the cacao growing into the mango. I think cacao are slow growing.

Rose beetle bad! But at least I won't be bitten. And I still haven't seen the dreaded centipede, so me happy.

LOL! Where the heck have I been with THIS thread HAAAAHAAAA....If you're agile enough to pull the "Kehena" on your head and shake your "junk" around (HAAA HAAAA HAA) then you may be a bit of a vouyerismo!!

My input is this...our gardenias are a lovely hedge...feed them your coffee grounds and their waxy, shiney leaves are second only to the fragrance they bless you with!

Okay, let me correct his right now: It's NOT ME who would be shaking my junk around. No one wants to see a guy in his fifties do a handstand. But I am a nice host and want OTHERS to feel free to do that. I love gardenias. I don't think I have any. But then, I didn't think I had a mango either.

I know I have a banana. I don't mind if people see it that want to.

Please, please write a book Glen...it would be fabulous! You could do it in the spirit of "Midnight in the Garden of Eden [Wink][Wink] (play on words here)." It could be Lusiana kinda thing.

Well speaking of coffee... I just finished roasting our first batch of home grown hpp coffee for this year! All I can say is the house smells like heaven...and the dark roasted coffee taste divine.

I like all kinds, but I have to admit, the dark roast is something I will never forget.
