Factors which embolden & discourage thieves
#21
Has anyone approached the police to see if they would be interested in using such technology if it was provided for them?

Not yet. We just got a new Chief of Police. FoPF might make a visit to him after the holidays.

Our board hasn't discussed it yet. Plenty going on as it is.

Assume the best and ask questions.

Approaching the new chief of police in a friendly manner with evidence of community enthusiasm & financial support toward cooperative efforts, plus great examples of how law enforcement elsewhere is using new inexpensive technologies to good advantage (as demonstrated via the great ABC story above on recovering stolen GPS-tracked Baby Jeebuses, busting mangy Manger-thieves, and suchlike) would be an ideal first step.

If the new chief does not initially warm to the idea, then perhaps we could write a formal declaration of concern and request, posting it at an online petition site for folks throughout Puna to sign. [Here is an example of such a site:
http://www.petitiononline.com/MPoll4Ag/petition.html
...please see details in the fine print at screen bottom on how to set up such an online petition, targeted toward meeting Puna's needs].
Thousands of local signatures on such a request for action would be pretty difficult for local officials to ignore when both cooperative community intent and technical feasibility have both been amply demonstrated.

Folks have mentioned driveway sensors and barking dog alarms. Here are some sources I have come across for that sort of technology:

German shepherd barks more intensely the closer intruder approaches

Rex the Watchdog bark alarm

Driveway sensors with wireless transmission ranges of 600 feet, 1000 feet, 3000 feet, with wire up to 5000 feet, and wireless up to 2 miles. Hover and click on model numbers in white bar at top of screen for details.

Hey folks, I agree these are all really great ideas. I've been here a little over a year so sorry to say I have no confidence in the police helping us or even giving us the time of day. I know they are stretched thin but I also think they have 'conflicts of interest' due to most of these perps being their own family. I think if we are going to get anything done we're going to have to do it ourselves. I'm willing to donate time for patrolling or being a neighborhood watchman. I'll even help folks install home security, alarms, surveillance etc. I'm a mechanic by trade so I can also help install car alarms, theft devices, lojacks, steering column armor, etc. I'd be glad to help improve our neighborhoods.[Smile]

I think that's a misconception. Like Doctors, Lawyers, and baseball players, some cops are better than others. The biggest factor in poor police response and performance however, is numbers, and area.

It was nice being pulled over at 2:00 in the morning flying 100 MPH on the Kona side of the island only to be pulled over by a relative who warned me about other officers ahead [Wink]

This was about 12 - 13 years ago... I only drive 100 mph now when I'm being chased by them[Big Grin]

I do think that a system of catching the thieves is best. Once word got out that there was a tracking "sting" going on things would change a bit.

Just HPP has 8,800 lots. So we either have to inhibit thieves one house at a time or catch the half dozen perps and keep them caught. The latter seems most cost effective and practical.

You know, an individual can set up a tracking system. A contractor can get a system, place it in their stuff and have it alert them if it leaves a certain perimeter. If that happens, call the police. This would be a good test to see if they would take such a report of a theft in progress seriously. We can say the police won't do anything, but we have just as many conflicting statements from people who say they have called on crimes and did and didn't get a speedy response.

Very correct Bob. There is a product called Loc8tor which sounds an alarm if the tagged subject (child, dog, personal item) leaves a set distance from the home unit. Quite useful with small children I would think.

I think that a GPS effort needs to launch with one of the D.A.'s and a commitment from the D.A.'s Office to prosecute. Then with the D.A. in hand the approach to the Chief of Police and County Council needs to be made.

At each step pf the way it can be indicated that this system is coming into play so be a part of it.
