Free range chickens YES or NO

No free range chickens are not fair game. Those aren't your chickens, Tom, and you may have pissed off some neighbors. Did you mention to your neighbors that the chickens were digging up your garden? Putting out food to entice them onto your property isn't proper, either. If the police did that, it would be called entrapment, wouldn't it?

It isn't about the chickens, it isn't about being "right" or being "wrong" - it is about getting along with your neighbors. If YOU wanted to be a good neighbor, you would fence in your garden to keep the chickens out or fence in your back yard and let your dog deal with any chickens who come over the fence. Or you would talk to your neighbors and let them know you were having a problem so you could all work it out together.

I think talking with the neigbors is a good idea, but thinking about putting up hundreds of dollars worth of fencing is playing the part of a doormat.

"Get a dog and spend some time training it. Simply the best protection there is. I have been stolen from in the past, but no more. It took me around eight months to train my dog and it was time well spent. The dog is a mixed breed, muscular, deep bark, with a wonderful growl. He has never been on a chain nor do I walk him on a leash, very [important]. He has only left the property when in my Auto, also very [important]. I have no fences or walls to lock him in and he runs free on my property 24 hours a day. He will bark at anyone that walks by my home but he will not leave the property. If anyone tries to come on my property he will stand in your face and bark and growl until I come and relieve him of his duty. Not one person has gotten by him yet and I have asked friends to try when I was not home. No person will ever trespass when they see a barking dog who is not on a chain, trust me on this."- The Lack

No disrespect Tom, but did these chickens kill your guard dog, or is he vegan?

Bob Orts,

No Bob my property is not fenced, nor do I intend to fence it because of some dumb chickens. If any fences go up it will be the people that find it necessary to have free range birds.

csgray,

I bought property in Hawaiian Beaches because there is no home owners assoc. I have been there and don’t like the idea of someone telling me that I can’t park my boat in my back yard. Chickens don’t bother me if they stay home and not in my garden.

csgray,

I don’t expect people to change for me, just keep your f—ing chickens in your own yard and out of my garden. If not, you can go and catch them down on the government road.

Jon,

You are right I have lived on the Big Island going on 40 years come March, and yes you are right again I am dealing with the chicken plague and it is rapidly becoming under control.

Hotzcatz,

I have talked to my neighbors and said we have a problem here with “your” chickens. Would you like my help building some coops I have all of the tools and we could do it in an afternoon. The answer, naw it would cost too much for the wood and wire. I even offered to donate the wire, the answer was still naw. So I ask you who is the bad neighbor?

Dave Smith,

Truth be known Dave I actually like the singing frogs. I’m listening to them now.

Greg,

Thanks for posting that. My dog Toast was trained not to attack other creatures [even humans] just to stand his ground and let me know when someone was on the property. To my dismay he has regarded chickens as a non threat and leaves them alone. But the one that still has me scratching my head is that he allowed someone to steal the chicken trap from my yard.

Let me put it this way Hotzcatz, those chickens were coming on my yard and in my garden before I started to put out food “in my yard” to trap them. I no longer have to entice them, they are gone and if you want to take the high moral grown and call it entrapment, so be it. I now have my garden back and no more 05:30 hours of cock-a dodol-do. If the neighbors don’t like it raise turtles they lay eggs too.

Tom, Thanks for your personal reply. Here's what I think: Toast took your trap and hid it so he could continue to visit with his fowl buddies.

The same standards also seems apply to free range thieves.

You can not do anything to upset or deprive anyone (or any animal) of anything.
You must just be a victim and take it.

Your garden is for all to consume. stop being so selfish.

wtf?

Our dog loves chickens and sits with them, it's funny! Our neighbor's chickens have all been killed by his own dog, all but one.

This one chicken must be lonely because it comes over first thing in the morning and stays with our chickens until it's bed time. Our neighbor has a fully fenced yard and a coop, and the chicken still gets out! We don't mind as our own free range chickens poop on our lanai as it is [:0](earns our son some nice extra cash for cleaning it up a few times a week! lol)

Anyway, I think the bottom line is that no one should be expected to have to deal with animals or anything else on their property if it isn't wanted. It doesn't matter who was there first! That's the craziest thing I've heard by the way... That's like saying just because you purchased a home next to someone who's been there longer, you have no choice but to adopt their pets and let them have free range of your property! Maybe if the neighbors smoke, it's ok to throw their butts right on over too, huh?

It's helpful when neighbors get along and are willing to meet each other half way, otherwise I'm afraid Tom doesn't have much of a choice in the matter but to deal with it in his own way! Nothing at all wrong with that when you're left with no one but yourself to remedy a situation.
