Well, to describe our December 25 I have to back up a couple of days. After the shower started leaking into the kitchen we were able to get someone to come and begin work on replacing the shower floor, fixing the holes in the shower walls where the previous owners had installed grab bars but not adequately sealing that and then removing the drywall from above the counter (after removing kitchen cabinets!!!). So that was Monday. Tuesday I awoke to big bites having been taken out of our papayas on the counter - which has not happened in 16 months of living here. Rats!!! literally. Evidently our townhouse complex has had a bit of a problem lately, but only when our ceiling was opened did we experience it. Wednesday a.m. after having the ceiling closed up again, we thought possibly the rat/mouse whatever was gone, (it could have happened, maybe out the front door?) so we'd left out more papaya and, well, same thing. So Christmas eve, after a really nice dinner with friends at a beautifully decorated home, we returned and set 3 big traps. 20 minutes after lights out, from upstairs, we heard one snap! Actually sounded like two. Too tired to deal with it we closed the bedroom door.
Christmas morning, my hero husband, went down and dealt with the (now dead) RAT before I got there. We hope it had no friends that were left behind but will leave the other 2 traps out again tonight! So I started the day washing the floor, counters, and everything else I could think may need some cleaning as a result.
But now, I have my Chanukah candles placed for the fifth night tonight. Bill is using his new Christmas gift - a LeCreuset French Oven (you don't think they would call it a Dutch oven would you?) and making a wonderful Hungarian Beef Stew. We've been looking at house plans and think 2009 will be the year we do it, finally.
I'm about to put some holiday music on the CD player. I wish I had a copy of Santa Baby to honor Eartha Kitt.

Sheryl... that is quite a ratty story! Geesh... let's hope there was only one! EWWWW! Also horrible about the shower leaking, what a mess. The worst is over.
I also put on Eartha tonight.
Best of luck to you in getting going on the new house!2009 is your year.

We look forward to your arrival Devany - I've looked at your website. The first time we say giant clams underwater was off of the Rock Islands of Palau. It was magical. We don't dive anymore but I will enjoy seeing your pottery.

Wahooo, no need to sugar coat it, I do celebrate the holidays. Today when I had a rat in the sights of my rifle I though that I saw Santa Claus scurrying across the noon sky. I didn’t want to take the chance of spoiling everyone’s Xmas with a misdirected shot so I let the rat escape and Santa HO HO HO’ed his way to your house. So you had better thank me for this wonderful Christmas. Sadly for the rat it showed up again without Santa in the background and is now pushing up daisies. The very least you could do is send me a gift for my humanitarian actions. Merry Christmas.

Almost guilty feeling of lack of work, barely half a spray can of paint yesterday.
Made a nice homemade cranberry relish to share with friends at Christmas eve potluck and today a pasta salad for a Christmas day gathering. For breakfast we brewed coffee grown by good friends just above Hilo. Had to enjoy five or six rainbows as we ate this afternoon, only to be followed by a beautiful Hamakua sunset We all agreed life in Hawaii can be such a challenge - and we all accept to be the ones to endure. Now it's rain rain rain as we relax and watch Ice Age: The Meltdown.
Back to the grind tomorrow

In England during the war, there was no roast beast for the table of course. So a friend's family save their Christmas rations of eggs flour and fake butter for Yorkshire pudding, sans the beouf. We were 6 for dinner last eve and had the works. Of course the gift on the minds and in the hearts of everyone last eve is the future of our economic health, and peace and good will to all! Today it's out to pick the citrus, and return to reality!
