Pahoa's Island Trust Realty Broken Into!
#81
The issue will clearly take and should embrace a multitude of approaches. Anything that works will work.

The shift in perception is clearly coming. It will take much increased personal involvement on all parts to make progress on issues of this nature in the forthcoming economic environment.

At the end of the day, even if cameras or gps or none of the above really worked--at the very least the real effort and personal involvement in concrete action is a very empowering influence on a community, and it's worth any of it for that alone. It changes perspectives, and changes attitudes. This is part of the whole as well.

The other day I was down in Pahoa to meet with Damon's father in law and pick up a book. I was sitting in the coffee shop observing the scene. The coffee shop was out of coffee. A number of folks were loitering around in various costumes. Some bearded dude with a beanie on his head was parading around in the parking lot playing a flute. Watching all this, and noting that while the flute playing wasn't too skilled--his skill in checking car doors to see if they were locked or not was pretty deft.

So, what does one do? Call the cops on the musician? No evidence, no anything. It's not too encouraging to be in such a position as to more or less have to sit helplessly--unless I physically go out there and ram the flute, well, and then go to jail myself. We don't have crime problem, per se. We have a culture problem. And of course the culture is all of us. And why I still insist change starts with personal action.

Yes, you should have notified the police... at least that is what the police told me to do, "if its suspicious looking, make the call"... The evidence is your gut, and they said that was enough for them to at least check things out.

I'm sorry Jon, that was hardly my point. If I called on suspicions in Pahoa I'd burn batteries in my phone flat and still have suspicions.

Actually, what I did, after Jerry left, was wait till he got next till he got near my truck and I went out and told him to keep his greasy fingers off of other peoples stuff. As I've said, I've worked in law enforcement and it doesn't bother me to be involved. My actions are nothing more or less than the police could have done in the same situation. More than anything it is important for those "sorts" to know, for sure, the rest of us know what is going one and we don't appreciate it. It's important that the criminal element doesn't frame the picture in their mind as "Us vs. the cops" which they often do, but rather "Us vs. everyone."

At this point I'm encouraged that some are becoming a little more understanding of the issue at hand. There are various types of crises one can face in life, some are systemic and are fixed by systemic means, and some are acute and are fixed by dynamic means. The "pot hole" issue is clearly an "acute issue." Skate parks are not, and is a place where planning and committee action makes more sense. While there is a place in the health of a body for systemic holistic health and such, a compound fracture may require more immediate attention.

Crime especially often is a combination of acute and systemic problems, and will require both types of responses. Neglect of meaningful systemic problems often creates acute crises, and crime is no exception. This is my point. As well, at this moment in history I would argue that perhaps the majority of issues we face are of an acute nature and we're going to all be very busy if we want to retain the level of civility we've in the past enjoyed. Ultimately, this is what I'm getting at, and the discussion I was attempting to provoke.

What did you do to him? All he has been talking about is Rocket Stoves and how cool your house is! Thanks for the grill for the stove as well.

Back to topic.

Unfortunately... Island Trust did not have an alarm. It will/does now.

Well, the conversation up the hill here is mostly consumed with the topics of Kalo and 'awa. . .he's hooking me up with the good stuff tomorrow morning and we'll see how it does on biochar.

Here's an example of a "virtual" neighborhood watch. It's sponsored by a Texas Sheriff's coalition and primarily concerned with illegal entry. They do have a camera set up in a "high crime area" also.

Just found out...
The police arrested a juvenile that night. It was just a random act of violence and not related to the rest of the recent Pahoa Town Burglaries.
