Kama'aina rate...

How much of a discount is it? I know I can ask about it, but can't get it since we don't live on-island yet.
Is it just for "touristy type" stuff?

You never know. It's not always given. Not required. You never know who gives kama'aina. I just ask when I go to check out.

Kama'aina discounts vary widely, and I have experienced everything from 10% to 30%. They are mostly for things like hotels, museums, botanical gardens, and tourist attractions. Hilo Hattie's gives kama'aina discounts on clothing only, I think. Some places don't advertise having them, so it doesn't hurt to ask.

I got a kama'aina discount at Hilo Hattie's without asking. I used plastic and showed my State of Hawaii I.D. card when asked for I.D. The I.D. card even shows my Florida address.

It doesn't even come into play unless you're talking about a business patronized mostly by tourists. I can't remember the last time I got one. Going to another island and staying in a hotel, I think.

Often it's no better than a AAA or AARP discount anyway.
There was a time Brown's Beach House offered a 20% K discount on food (not alcohol), which was nice. We took advantage of that six years ago. The next time we went there was no more KD. Who knows, maybe they'll reinstate it?

I used to work at Rocky's liquor in Kailua, Oahu. When locals came in it was pretty standard that they would grab two cases of beer and pay for one.

Often the phrase " Hey one fo me huh?" was used.

The local employees would always give it, I never would.

It just wasn't mine to give.

Like he says it never hurts to ask. I know that the Kalapana Village Cafe, at the end of the road, has given us a 10% discount. I'm not sure if the new one in Pahoa does though. And the Imiloa at UH Hilo is a few dollars less for Kamaiana.

The Hapuna Prince Hotel on the Kona side has a Kama'aina rate of ~$150. You can go on their site and see how that compares.
