Hello Mr. Wolf, won't you please sit down?
This has been a very interesting read and I am glad I stumbled upon it. Thanks to all who have participated. I have many thoughts bouncing around in my head but don't think I am prepared to voice them just yet. Also thanks to those who provided links to additional information.

...I'd still hold for a bottom in the Stock Markets at about 7000 - 7200. It is possible that we could see valuations below this, but I suspect if things get that dire there will be very little interest in investing. I'd expect another slide of 10 in real estate values too.

Dow index this morning: 7357.15 -108.80 (-1.46%) Feb 20 12:14pm ET

"The Dow Jones industrial average has fallen more than 100 points from last night's close of 7465.95, the lowest level of the financial crisis. Investors are feeling increasingly beleaguered by the onslaught of negative news and fears that the recession will prove to be longer and more severe than previously expected. There are also worries that US plans to rescue banks may end up involving the nationalisation of Citigroup and Bank of America. The Dow Jones dipped to 7327.04, nearly 140 points down on last night."

Is there any profit in becoming an accurate prophet, JWFITZ? You are within spitting distance of having made an accurate call on the stock market slide.

Hey, does anyone know where JWFITZ is these days? I have not seen him post recently; is he out sailing around?

A bit of nifty-cool good news with which to leaven the dismal economic news: Puna's bicycles may become yet even more useful than already anticipated, especially for the more ancient members of our ohana. I fully intend to have youngsters of the clan pedal their excess energy into charging up the batteries and then swap those fully charged bikes with grandpa and grandma so they can whir around without having to pedal uphill. Take a look at "Green wheel turns pedal bike into electric hog - MIT trades bike tires for power generation, storage and propulsion system"

Yes, I can envision an elder standing on the lanai in HPP calling out "Hey, Gilligan, do you have a bicycle all charged up?" and the youngster's reply echoing back down the lane "Coming, Professor!"

Last time I saw Fitz I actually asked him if he had given up on punaweb. Turns out his computer was on the blink. Not to mention he's busy these days.

If his predictions continue to come true then (shudder)...

In early afternoon trading, the Dow dropped 149.66, or 2.03 percent, to 7,216.01, after earlier falling to 7,188.77, its lowest level since Oct. 28, 1997.

Hey punafish, when you see him please tell Fitz that he just won a carnival prize Teddy-bear in the Punaweb stock market index shooting arcade, alas.

Hi, I'm back! Thanks for the concerns. I didn't fall in a puka but the computer did.

There's no profit in being a prophet, except personally. Stil, of those "prophets" out there whose names we all know are profiting, the key isn't to be accurate in predictions but rather tell people what they want to hear and sell them a product in doing so.

Thanks Allen.

Anybody out there for a new round of predictions for the next year? It's very interesting to track the tone of this thread and where the conversation has gone over the time it's been running. To say that there has been a shift in attitude might be a bit of an understatement.

I think the Dow will go below 4k this summer and is on it's way to below 2k.
Oil may dip to 25.00/barrel but price per gal. of gas will stay higher than it should in relation.

Oil may hit 8.00/barrel w/in the next 4 years.

Tom Cruise will divorce Kate Holmes when she converts to Rastafarianism.

I'm expecting the DOW to go somewhere around 4,250 to 3,500 but I don't think we will see 2,000.

Gold will go to 1,800 or more.

The dollar may not survive, it may become the Amero or some such other currency.

Food and manufactured goods prices will double this year.

Home gardening and growing food will become very interesting to folks and backyard chickens will continue to be popular.

The unemployment rate will at least double from what it is now.

There is a slight possibility that the United States of America could fracture and drop off a few pieces.

If enough states go bankrupt, what happens then?

March 2, 2009 - edited to add in a time frame for Paul.
This is a prediction for this year, part of it before summer. The DOW is dropping as we speak (type, anyway) and will close well below 7,000 today.
