Blog/Bloggers - Necessary?
#41
Exactly right, Glen.

About the only place you'll find that sort of writing is in a few rural high school newspapers, at least anymore. Everyone else seems to need to write editorials.

Blog -it's just a tool.
A shallow person will have the type of blog Menehune can not stand.
A smart person with great journalist skills will have a great one.

Unfortunately,the latter is rare.

Maybe I've missed your point, Glen, but I think you've made my point. Spin it left, spin it right, it doesn't matter. There's probably a third and fourth and fifth point of view, as well as the two you presented. Everybody has a point of view, and there is no God of Journalism to appeal to in order to verify what is impartial and what is not. I'm sure there are many good journalists out there who've done their best to present Who, What, Where, etc., but nobody is perfect. Even the 9 Supreme Court Justices have points of view, which is why it's such a big deal when it comes time to replace one of them.

I'd prefer journalists (and bloggers) who announce their perspective up front so I can put what they have to say into context.

Wherever this topic takes itself...

I offer my services to pretty much anyone to help them set up their own blog.

I don't charge a penny because I truly understand the importance of what blogs can be and are good for.

It typically takes about 30 minutes to get a person who can send email to a person who can post a blog.

And heck... if it's a blog that is fairly active... I might just toss it on the FBI site.

Notice I said... "Active".

Content and what is good and bad... is not for me to judge.

But giving others their chance to express themselves is something that I can give to all.

You can reach me through my email on my blog if your interested in setting up a blog.

I don't make housecalls [Wink] it can all be done right over the computer via email/twitter/comments/chat/etc.

Epilogue

I am once again humbled by the depth and diversity of the commentary here on PunaWeb.[8)]

I would be amiss if I did not clarify/answer certain postings.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Damon states: "Being anonymous on the internet is far less credible in my opinion then standing by your name and your beliefs."

Who am I? Neil said it best:
"I am," I said
To no one there
An no one heard at all
Not even the chair
"I am," I cried
"I am," said I
And I am lost, and I can't even say why
Leavin' me lonely still

But PaulW's post is more PunaWeb correct:
"On the contrary, someone who chooses anonymity (and the choice is there for a reason) on a forum can be called to account for everything they say on that forum by the other members."
Bloggers, however, can simply delete any comments they don't like from their blogs."

I admire those that feel "safe" to become a PUBLIC entity as blogs/bloggers do. I myself do not want to expose myself and ohanna to the "nasty's" out there in cyberspace.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Aaron S asks: "Menehune, do you know Noelani Whittington ? It seems you you do as it appears you are defending her action in drafting that directive blackballing me, Damon Tucker, and David Corrigan."

No - I have never had the pleasure of meeting either Noelani Whittington or you.
No - I do not percieve my posting "IMHO the questions stated above where the foundation for DPW's media policy." as defending anything or anyone. It is just another way of "viewing" the issue.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Aaron S said: "On that note, this topic is very frustrating to someone like myself.I spend a couple hours of my free time each day updating my blog. Thus I feel like I'm getting unjustly criticized because I blog."

I appreciate your feelings - but NOTHING was directed at YOU. It is your perception - just because you blog on the Big Island. On that note - it is admirable that you take the time to pursue your blog - but doing that has put you in the PUBLIC eye - open to more scrutiny and CRITICISM than the average person.

John S. Rabi has some sound advice: "The truth is, it doesn't matter what you do, you always will have people disagreeing with you. Do what you do, do it right, be diligent, and you will be successful and you will have your following. You should care about those only."

Bob Orts summed it up:

"Bloggers can be any idiot who writes anything they want for whatever reason".

There has been a void since Hunter left, for sure.

Until someone more skillfull steps up. we have.......(enter blogger name here)

Menehune, I re-read what you originally posted. I stand by my original assessment that you were

A. Defending the rescinded DPW media policy
B. Taking a pot shot at us bloggers

I am certainly aware that my blogging has opened myself to more criticism. However I will not sit idly around when a arm chair quarterback is criticizing me because I blog.

Greg -

Hunter told me himself that he never considered himself a great blogger and was more of a writer/journalist.

A good blogger knows how to use many tools of the cyberworld to create a good blog. Hunter barely learned how to post a picture.

I myself don't consider myself a good blogger, because I don't know even 1/4th of the tools that I could be using to create a good blog.

In Hunters Blog swan song...

He mentioned turning to three specific bloggers on the Big Island for future references.

I was stunned to learn that I was named as one of those people to fill his shoes.

I knew from the get go, that I could never be as good of a Writer as Hunter was.

But still to this day... even though Hunter is no longer "Blogging"...

I'm still getting on him.... and where he is now at... to get with the digital era.

Stillhope... you don't want to know my thoughts do you? If you even understood what a blog was just a tiny bit... you might have some credence to your thought.

You make comments like the above... and you don't even know who your insulting.

I'll remember to tell Uncle Robert how you feel about some of his family members when you are desperate to use a computer that (enter blogger name here) may have fixed previously.

It is unfortunate that some people have no idea what goes into "Blogging" and what makes a good blog and a bad blog.

I find the two pretty hard to distinguish as it's just a matter of personal taste.

It is a sad day in Blogger history... when someone passes judgment on something without even knowing much about the concept.

What is the difference between a blog and a letter to the editor?

Sounds to me like a discussion about a form of writing that has been around for hundreds of years...

"Definition: an online diary; a personal chronological log of thoughts published on a Web page; also called Weblog, Web log"

The only thing that has changed is the format and availability.
