State’s combined solid waste flow on Hawaii Island
#21
I was on Kauai last week and read an article about an Oahu waste to energy incinerator. I do not know tons about this and I assume waste is burned and therefore produces pollution but I am not sure. I will be researching this subject further. Too bad this cannot handle the waste. I will be following this topic closely. Thanks for the post James.

Recommend you search this web site for "waste to energy" and "incineration", incinerator" -- there is some information from the discussion one year ago when an incinerator was proposed here.

Thanks again I will do so as I am sure it is a very interesting and informative discussion.

Guess the bottom line here is all of the excess packaging and waste in our very disposable society. Most people don't think much about this until those taxed with finding a place to dispose of it start looking in our own backyards. Hopefully some eyes will open and habits will change as a result of this.

It isn't mentioned that the landfill we speak of is UNlined. EPA requires all such open landfills to be tightly lined to avoid leaching out to the enviro, and this is everywhere nationwide, ours is damn near oceanfront, and mixing with the watertable but not lined. Worse yet, before, during the burn facility debate, "one flourescent light bulb dropped on a towel and put in the facility would create enough toxins that we must reject yhe facility". We did reject it, and now we all have to use mercury laden flourescent bulbs, and mercury is the major fish toxin in the ocean. Tell me no broken ones are improperly disposed of. Mabe to them, they're just shore fish, but that stuff travels and has marlin damn near inedible.

A quote by Emily Naeole our councillady, whose vote stopped it, "I did it for "Dr. Worthington" . The Dr also trumped the idea of composting for fertilizer, so I guess he asked for it. At least the state will pickup the tab!
