Don't click on it though - it is the actual information - not a link to my ego.

This thread started out as a viable discussion, but soon degenerated into silliness.

That said, I agree with much of what Carol wrote, but since we're beating this dead horse just thought I'd throw in one more question:

What's the difference, from an ego standpoint, between publishing one's musings on a blog versus someone who wants to get their book or magazine article published? (Getting published isn't always about money.)

I submit that anyone who has ever aspired to get their writings published has an ego. Wouldn't "number of books sold" equal number of hits on one's blog (again, forgetting the monetary dimension)?

Lots of big egos lurk on forums as well. Different folks have different motivations for posting, of course. Could be "look how smart I am giving this advice"; could be a snarky comment so everyone sees how "clever" you are; could be to advertise one's good deeds to the world, or just write a beautiful, entertaining piece that brings rave reviews from readers.

Not saying it's good or bad, just that we all have egos; pinning the "ego tag" on "bloggers in general" seems a bit judgmental.

JMHO.

Almost forgot: February 2nd...groundhog day :-)

I still don't understand why the original post generated so much animosity. It seemed fair and balanced to me regardless of whether or not a reader agreed with all of the points. To me it doesn't read like an attack on bloggers. It reads like someone trying to come to grips with a changing world.

I think if hindsight was 20/20 I should've kept my mouth shut about Menehune's original post. If I did maybe this thread would've not turned into a thread attacking me and my blog.

In summary it seems that I've rubbed quite a few people the wrong way with my blogging.

Your blogging doesn't bother me a bit. I'm not big on following blogs or the new twitter for that matter but I've been to your blog a few times. It seems fine to me. I just didn't see an issue with the original post. It seemed open minded and uncritical for the most part.

Oink, I could not agree more with your thoughts on this subject. Somehow the thread went askew. Too bad, as Joey had some good points.

And Aaron, I like your blog. I have rarely been to a blog that I did not like. I love being able to see the world through the eyes of others and I learn a lot through blogs in many respects.

Now Twitter, that is another story... not so sure I care about what people are doing every five minutes.

How else would you get information like tonights Journey Concert that the Tickets ARE STILL AVAILABLE at the door... Directly from a DJ at a local station when Everyone else is saying tickets aren't available?

Twitter is already old hat. The newest thing is Twit. Same idea basically, but instead of 140 characters you just use 1 character to express your mood and/or deeper feelings.
