shipping

aloha all...my husband needs to ship over his construction tools from California and we were wondering if anyone has done this before. We don't need a container since we are not bringing anything else..It will be mostly hand tools and a few ladders. Any advice will be appreciated. Monique

Aloha Monique, We did this same thing. Just packed our tools & stuff into bins and crates and took it to Honolulu Freight. They load it all onto a pallet and then it goes into a container. You see it again in a few weeks, still wrapped up on its pallet, ready and waiting for you to come and get it in Hilo. Easy. Actually, we've done it twice so far - moving over in bits & pieces.

There are other similar companies, but we really like Honolulu Freight. They are up & down the west coast.

Good luck!

aloha, Liz

Honolulu Freight did right by us too. Highly recommended. One way to easily 'crate' items is to buy the big metal toolboxes (a Job Box) that you see on construction sites. You might hear them called by their manufactures name too: Knack, Greenlee, Ridgid. They lock shut, are pre-built so to speak & you have secure tool storage when you get to Puna. A guy dropped off 3 to Honolulu Freight the same day we were there...it was a "OH DUH, why didn't we think of that!" moment for sure. Next time I ship, I'm using a Job Box. You can usually find them used on Craigslist on the mainland, just be sure to search by the manufacturer name, not just 'Job Box'.

Wow. I have about 250 cubic feet (6'x6'x6' plus a bit more) of miscellaneous household items stored in Nevada. Any idea as to how I can get them here???

thanks for the reply's...can you give me a rough estimate of the cost? He isn't sure yet to sell and buy new in Hawaii or keep and ship over.

we built a crate put the tools in took it to a freight forwarding company paid a little extra and the tools arrived 2 days after we did from the east coast. It was a lot cheaper than replacing all the nail guns and saws. It was a few years ago I think we paid around $100

we've been trying to order some tools (ridgid) online from home depot and they don't/won't ship to hawai'i. they got some good deals going on. you might want to bring over what you have.

I did not know that Home Depot did not ship here. That is crazy since they have a store here. Sears (who have some pretty good tools) does ship to their stores where you can pick up.

You will find that a lot, people that do not ship to Hawaii. The best vendors are people that use USPS, as that is the cheapest way to "mail" things. Amazon.com uses USPS, but many of their independent vendors do not. Someone should compile a list of the best online sites for shipping to Hawaii, that would be really helpful.

Our cat has to have special prescription dry food because of allergies and not a single vet here has it or will order it for us. I just had to pay $68 shipping for five bags of cat food as they only ship 2nd day air to Hawaii. There are no "ground shipping" rates for us with UPS or Fed Ex.

We sent over 30 boxes of books and about 20 boxes of important things that we would need before the container arrived. Most of those 20 boxes were "flat rate" boxes, all you can fill them with for $12.

Media rate works great for the books, CD's,DVDs, papers and any other media you have. It is very cheap, but ours too 6 weeks to get here. My mailman in CA jokingly told me the media rate stuff sits on the docks till they have enough to fill a container.

yeah. very disappointing about the tools. that particular set was the deal of the century. ridgid tools deals directly with home depot and renee was told by them to talk to HD directly to see what they could/would do. i tried to order a rug from them as well (some time ago), and the same scenario. wondering if it's because i'm ordering online? maybe if it was through their store, it would be possible?

also disappointing is the fact that when online stores advertise, "free shipping", a lot of them don't count HI and AK.

what brand of cat food is it?
