Owning guns in Hawaii
#41
What, you mean suicides? While thats the most statistically likely outcome, I'm not advocating that at all. I could understand shooting feral cats, which might give a few heads a spin, however. . .

Pump is best by far. A short double like a coach gun will work fine for distances required for home defence. The problem with the double is it's either left empty and then shells have to be located and loaded (in the dark probably) or it's left loaded with just the safety on. The pump can be left with the magazine loaded but with the chamber empty, a much safer option. It can then be brought into action simply by cycling the action with the resulting sound that will scare off most punks. If not, point and pull the trigger. I vote for the light shot but full power. Any direct hit at 15 feet will work regardless of the shot type. The light stuff is just safer for those other than the intended target. I prefer #6 shot. That said, I will probably be holding a Kimber 1911 with 45 HPs. Locally we just had an incident where the ne'er-do-well broke into a home and shot the woman in the neck with a shot gun. Unfortunately for him he just grazed her neck. She grabbed her .40 and put three rounds into him. Amazingly, he was able to flee and drive away. He was later caught and is now in ICU. I guess they caught him a little too soon.

As to the original question, I would suggest purchasing before you move. The only gun shop I visited was one in Hilo and that was several years ago. However, their selection stank and I thought they were expensive. Price wise it's a bad time to purchase most anywhere. Obama's election and the depressed economy has resulted a run on the gun shops and real good deals are hard to find. With the reduced inventory on the island I would imagine the effect is even more pronounced.

Suicides are statistically the most likely outcome? I didn't know that.

I was thinking more along the lines of the gun being used to shoot you, your wife, your children, your neighbor.
Either accidentally, or in a drunken rage, or by a burglar, or used in a school shooting, or a work shooting, or a suicide, or in a robbery after being stolen. The possibilities are endless.

PaulW...
better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6...

Paul, I hope you don't drive, or live on a second floor, or have any kind of drugs in your house... because if you do, you must have a hard time dealing with all the possibilities something bad might happen.

As a man I was taught that it was my job to protect my family, myself and my community, not hide in the closet and hope someone else does.

You are correct about the endless possibilities... that is why you should be prepared for them...

I can read bumper stickers too, no need to repeat them here.
Any original thoughts are welcome though.

I've checked the newspaper this morning, but no news about
the death penalty for burglary being implemented. Or you
being appointed judge and jury.

Sure, I worry about things that can go wrong. That's why I
wouldn't welcome into my house something that was designed
specifically to kill people (unlike second floors, cars or medicine).

Keeping guns out of my house is my way of protecting my family,
myself and my community. There's more than one way to be a man.

Paul, in the exaample I cited in my previous post, the police were aware of issues that the suspect had with the resident and had been on the lookout for him in the area. Even with the heightened police awareness of the potential problem, the resident would have been dead had she not had the ability (.40cal) to defend herself. The police would have been investigating her murder. Incidentally, he wasn't using an evil assault rifle or handgun. He was using a hunting type shotgun that would have been legal under the strictest of proposed gun controls. Of course being a felon he was illegal in the possession of any firearm. Strangely, that didn't seem to concern him. Fortunately, she had one of those evil handguns. Incidentally, I'm not searching archives for this example. It was last week.

Many truths can be found on bumper stickers...

If my family's lives are on the line, then yes, I am judge and the jury. I will not hide a hope that someone comes their rescue...

At lest there are police officers out there that don't have your gun phobia and will at least attempt to protect your family for you, though, it will take them some time to get there.

I assume knives are not allowed in your house ether, or baseball bats, or slingshots, yoyo's, darts... the list goes on and on of things that were originally meant to kill...

Jon, Please don't let this devolve into a "must have gun" vs "afraid of gun" debate. I'm very familier with firearms and have intense first hand knowledge of the security, and the carnage that they can provide.

It's a personal choice, and there are a multitude of ways to provide security without guns.

I agree. Adam79 was very thoughtful in opening this topic with...

Let me start by saying I realize the "G" word can be very incendiary and incite all kinds of debate about personal safety, constitutional rights, etc. That is not the intent of me starting this topic. I'm simply looking for information and advice. If somebody wants to debate the topic of gun ownership, whether you are for or against it, please start a new topic.
Assume the best and ask questions.

You are correct Greg...

I equate the fear of guns with not wanting anyone else to have them. If you have no issues with law abiding citizens to have them, including your friends and neighbors, but you choose not to have them, then I would consider that to be a personal choice.
