Thanks Paul. The only problem is that our RR ISP runs through our outlook. We don't really use it though. It sits dormant usually.
We are both on Yahoo and love it. Today we purchased a 3-year package that will scan and delete. We look at the free ones, but this one has more to it and ought to keep our computer happy and our information secure.

Carrie,
I'm not sure what you mean by "our RR ISP runs through our outlook" but if it's starting up MS Outlook automatically I would shut it down and find a way from stopping it even starting up. Viruses love Outlook.
I always recommend AVG Free, it's completely free and works very well. But I'm sure a paid-for one will work too.

I do think Paul is right here. Outlook is only a way to read your mail and send it. I use it, but I know it requires some virus/worm protection to protect you. You can still receive mail via the RR. website, as clumsy as it may be, without using Outlook. The reason I prefer Outlook is that it seamlessly connects with my cell phone, updating my contacts and calendar.
However, this whole fiasco started from Facebook, a completely separate web site. My husband (not so savvy) was recently taken in by mylife.com when it asked to search his address book for friends... BAD move! You really have to think before you click on "yes" these days.

Paul - we have our ISP using the Outlook email address. We don't really use that. However, our new software just caught a Trojan virus coming from Facebook trying to get in. I agree about AVG...they are a little more limited than what we wanted, so I'm glad we went the route we did.

Carrie - I still don't know how an ISP needs an Outlook email address but maybe that's just me.
I'm curious though what your anti-virus has that AVG Free doesn't have, I'm not an expert but so far it's worked perfectly for me (but then again I don't use Facebook).

They're right. It's Outlook, not Facebook. Your computer has a virus and is using your outlook to send spam. Backup while you can. Usually a reformat is the only 100% cure.

A good site for infection help. It is an ad supported site so you must learn to look past the ads:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/ . Just about all infections can be eliminated without a reformat. Many can be eliminated with just a few free tools. However, with some it is way easier to reformat than to dig out all of the infection. If you're paying someone to work on it, it is very often cheaper to opt for a reformat. I maintain about 20 computers and almost never reformat, although I have images of every computer's drive and a wipe and reimage doesn't take long. If you don't want to spend considerable time at a site such as listed above(there are several very good help sites), you need to have your computer looked at by a pro or at least an expert amateur. Your computer may have even been turned into a clone.

rc808 - if that was true, then why am I not receiving anything at Outlook? All responses to that spam come into my yahoo.com email.
Anyway, it's all good and Trend (software) is doing well. So I guess some free software will scan for viruses and not spyware, etc. Some have a custom firewall feature others do not. It's all good if it's working for you.

Carrie,
You might want to check out a couple of spyware checkers. While your virus checker can help with viruses most cannot deal very well with spyware. There are a couple of good ones that are free to use. One is called Spybot Search and Destroy. Make sure you get the one using this title. There are others with similar names. It is free and can immunize your computer to help prevent infection. Also, another good one I have been thoroughly testing is Malwarebytes. It is one of the best in removing spyware. Both are free to use. If anyone wants the links to these software packages just shoot me an e-mail and I will be happy to send them to you. Or you can search for them through Tucows or Cnet.

I don't know why Yahoo then. If it's set as your default email with login stored, then that would be why. Or if your isp email gets forwarded to Yahoo, that would be why as well. An Outlook attack is the most common form of virus. Look closely at the facebook spam. Check the addresses it's coming from ie, facebook.spamdomainname.com instead of simply facebook.com. They will look very professional and easy to confuse. I've never heard of genuine facebook, paypal, ebay etc giving anyone a virus. Only a look a like.
