Toilet paper, rice and Spam are the traditional things to get when either hurricanes, tsunamis or dock strikes are headed our way. A two week supply of everything you use would be a safe thing to have when living on an island 2,500 miles away from the main supply depot.
The better thing would be the ability to grow and produce a lot of your necessary supplies. Fortunately, there is a lot of stuff grown and raised here but Oahu is going to be in a world of hurt in a big hurry so we need to grow enough food to feed them, too. Isn't Oahu supposed to be about nine meals away from running out of food?

Wish our garden were more advanced but I think many of us are on our way to self sufficiency. If anyone needs to trade for eggs, I have about 14 to 18 eggs a day.... Pam

I believe there are multiple issues, but the stumbling block is this.
Matson bought 4 new ships and in these difficult economic times, LOWERED the wages of workers on the new ships until such time as the ships could be paid for. They are now paid for. Workers want back up to the wages Matson workers (per their contract) receive. Matson doesn't want to give them the "raise". Matson unilaterally decided NO.
Anyone read anything more?

My brother is the captain of the matson ship currently in Honolulu harbor. I talked to him yesterday and indicated to me that it will never come to a strike. It's just a bunch of posturing on the part of both. They will reach an agreement today.....but....... Matson will probably raise rates to the islands to cover the negotiated salary and pension increases because it certainly isn't coming out of company profits!
