Island Chevrolet

Looks like Big Island Chevrolet is reopening under new management - we got a flyer announcing "Grand Opening" in mail today.

Good news for us GM owners - I hope.

I read about that in the Pacific Business News three weeks ago. Supposedly it is under the aegis of an Oahu dealership.

I think you’re correct. I’ve noticed more inventory moving in on the lot over the last few weeks.[Big Grin]

There has never been competition on the island for dealer service. It was choice of 1 place to get your warranty work done, then none, and perhaps 1 again.

Try getting bosch, girling or lucas parts out here. Once finding the part, then the real battle begins.. "But the address on the credit card doesn't say "general delivery" in the most pleasant formal british one can imagine.

Sears or Lex -cringe "We dont do alignments on those"

My brother compares my brit car adventures out here to that harrison ford, make ice in the jungle movie - mosquito coast ?

- just shakes his head........ lucas in a 120 inches of rain a year, yeah right

At least you have a dealer, man that is big time - grin

Haha..yeah General Delivery causes a few problems. People that don't live here just can't seem to grasp the concept that I cannot get home delivery and boxes are not readily available.

OR the concept that the mail is going to the post office but instead of putting it in a little numbered box they put it in an orderly pile instead. Same location but I gotta have a number..lol.

Finally resorted to getting a box DT Hilo where they seem readily available for $60/year. Of course I am down there often so it isnt inconvenient.

Please be kind.

Drifting way off topic,

I have come to prefer the general delivery system. It defines my neighborhood for me. At great place to meet and greet the neighbors, put a face and a voice on the folks in the driveways. I Cant think of a place I could ever call "home" without it having spent some time at the general delivery window.

I can drive to the window in a chevy with full big island dealer support now - there we go. Back on topic!

Apparently, the new Big Island Chevrolet service center didn't last too long. Now Chevy owners can get their warranty service at Big Island Toyota, which is now GM authorized and will carry GM parts and diagnostic equipment.

Big Island Chevrolet was opened by Saturn of Honolulu as a courtesy to GM and was originally only to be operated by them for 90 days until GM found a suitable dealership to reopen both the Hilo and Kona stores. B.I. Chevrolet operated from late June 2009 until mid-November - at a loss and GM would not help out on this.

GM screwed over B.I. Chevrolet by not allowing them to have the proper BAC code (GM term) which would have allowed them to have quick reimbursement and direct shipment of parts. Parts had to be shipped first to Oahu, then re-shipped to the Hilo location. This added days/weeks to parts deliveries and the reimbursement delays added to the monetary issues. This same issue will be the bane of Big Island Toyota due to the bureaucracy within GM.

GM still owns the lease on both of the old locations...according to my source.

GM promised (in late October) that there were two interested dealer groups that they were interviewing. One was from the East Coast and one from the West Coast. They also said that whichever dealer group got the franchise would have to agree to open both the Hilo and Kona locations for parts, sales and service. They could not confirm when an actual deal would be reached.

Really! Are you telling me that government-run car care is inefficient? Any similar problems with the still corporate-owned Ford franchises on the island?
