What the Heck happened to PUNA WEB?
#11
I agree with John.

Most of the folks posting here have plenty aloha.

I'll be curious to read what Rob has in mind, but PW is a great site.

don't get me wrong I still think puna web is great, I have now been on puna web for three years, long before we actually made the move to the island. We have met wonderful people with tons of Aloha through puna web. I have just noticed that their are allot more haters in puna web than in the past.
And am no way mad at Rob, I sure wouldn't want his job as moderator. the petty crap he must have to put up with.. No thanks.. and you don't get paid for it..Either Rob is a saint or a masochist only time will tell I[:I] suppose....

Hey Rob do you think some of the on purpose stuff is coming from those that have spun off to do their own blog's? That would be pretty low and petty..what a shame

There is a lot of snarking about Rob and how he runs his site over on the "new" Puna forum, not so much on the blogs, although Tom Lackey posted some pretty pointed cartoons about Rob on his blog. However, on that other Puna forum there are regular references to pushing the limits over here along the lines of "I just posted this on Punaweb, let's see what Rob does about it." I don't get it, they went to the effort to set up a whole new forum, with the rules (or non-rules) they wanted, and still 25% of what they do is piss and moan about Punaweb. I do think their negative focus on Punaweb has resulted in sending us some trolls from their site who start threads just to see what they can get going over here, but I also think the "founding members" over there are not likely to be posting here under a fake identity, I think they are mostly more honest and direct than that.

Carol, how does your post differ from your accusation? There is some criticism of PunaWeb and Rob's management style on PunaOnline. Some of the criticisms have been mine, but none I haven't previously expressed here on PunaWeb. I happen to like both sites. I also happen to have differences with both sites. I can live with that. PunaOnline tends to be a bit wilder and free form. The membership is much smaller than PunaWeb but is every bit as diverse. The diversity seems to be more welcomed by the PunaOnline members and is probably more evenly distributed across the political spectrum. I havaen't noticed the vitriol on PunaOnline that I've at times experienced on PunaWeb although the members on PunaOnline are quick to call "bulls**t" when they see fit, even when they are wrong. So far all arguing has been good natured, even when harsh. It isn't unusual to comment on PunaWeb happenings on PunaOnline, after all, PunaWeb is a much more mature (as in developed but read how you want) site with more members and visitors and therefore activity. I like both sites but sometimes on PunaWeb I feel so much in the minority that I don't bother to speak out. In other words I don't always call B.S. when I see it because I might cause a stampede which will get nasty. I have felt at times that Rob's management hasn't always been as fair as he probably thinks. At times he has given the impression that those of a political persuasion closely akin to that of his own are given more of a free hand when criticizing those holding opposing views. I suppose it is hard to always remain objective. Over all I like PunaWeb, most of the time, and I respect Rob. I reserve the right to criticize. I imagine Robs has been curious enough to visit PunaOnline. I believe his comments would be welcome there, even if he calls B.S. when he sees it. You can post there too Carol. You don't have to lurk. I really don't think Rob will see you as a traitor for openly visiting PunaOnline. I don't think I am. I have even visited Jays site, but I just lurked. I'm not currently in a position to contribute to that site. I'm a member of the HPP forum too. Unfortunately it seems near dead. A shame. Oh yeah, I don't think PunaOnline is exporting trolls although anybody can act the troll on occasion. Your post could be construed that way. It obviously got me fired up Wink

Oink,
If you reread my post you would notice I said that " I also think the "founding members" over there are not likely to be posting here under a fake identity, I think they are mostly more honest and direct than that." which could be construed as defending Punaonline when someone suggested the trolls here were the people who spun off on their own blogs.

I still think that the ongoing sniping at Rob and Punaweb could have motivated some portion of Punaonline readers or members to think that it is a really cool thing to screw with Punaweb. Is that the founders of Punaonline's direct fault, no. Is it a predictable outcome of what is said there, yes. It doesn't take much encouragement to make some people think they have been given a green light to be cyberjerks.

I don't participate in Punaonline because so far it is more about people dissing Rob and Punaweb than it is anything else, and that isn't a conversation I am interested in, and not because I am concerned that Rob might "see you as a traitor." I am still waiting for a conversation or topic that I find interesting enough to join, but the site does keep adding members so that could happen someday. Although, one of the site moderators posting a new member's ISP addresses and workplace website just because they didn't like them was more than a little creepy to me.

a big UGH [xx(]

I have been enjoying what Puna Web has to offer...the whole idea is to share the thoughts, ideas, information, get people to THINK. If it did that for you, why complain? Your mind was opened, right?

Carol and lostboystoy,

Like Oink, I'm a member of both Punatalk and Punaonline. I'm also not a "founding member" of Punatalk yet have a blog.

I like Punatalk but I find it a bit restrictive sometimes, but that is not a problem, it's Rob's forum and his to do with what he wants. I respect that and I have found lots of very useful information on the site that I wouldn't find elsewhere. I also like Punaonline, it's less restrictive and if I have to be honest, much friendlier, but that is my opinion. For instance, I can post a photo or two there! Then again, I'm on a dialup, so Punatalk is great because I don't end up downloading large images. Just examples of how I find both fora useful.

There are certainly a few posts over there about Punatalk but your own post was of a similar manner to that you complain about. No problem although I don't understand the references to bloggers who have "spun off" to create their own blogs. I would like to understand what that means if it can be explained.

The comment "and still 25% of what they do is piss and moan about Punaweb" seems to me to be both utterly incorrect and an inflammatory statement intended to start some kind flame war. Yes, there are, in my opinion, some inappropriate posts there, but 25%? Exaggeration is always a good way to make people roll their eyes and dismiss and argument, and I've said that a million times!

Tom

My look how defensive you guy's are... What the hell. And gotta love all the advertising for the other sites, I should have asked for a listing of the puna web like sites. But its amazing that I asked Rob's opinion, That you guy's are are all puffed up looking guilty as crap. I asked Rob's opinion if you were not guilty why would you even open your mouth? I just had a flash back of elementary school. [Wink]

Lost,
Huh! Not defensive just trying to clear the air. You liked the advertising? Yeah, I did get a little carried away with making stuff hot Smile Once I started I couldn't stop, sorry. I don't feel guilty of anything. I have called B.S., percentage wise, probably more on PunaOnline (notice it's not hot) than here. I understand there may be conflict ;/ between certain individuals involved in the respective sites. I don't want anything to do with that and I'm blissfully ignorant on the details. I won't speak for Rob or anyone else specifically. They can speak for themselves. I'm a member of both forums and as I stated before, I think both have good and bad. I most certainly don't agree with everything said on either site. I will do my best to not attack anyone personally on either site when I don't agree with them. I do reserve the right to be a smartass at times. Has there at times been excessive criticism of PunaWeb an PunaOnline. IMHO yes, but heck, that hasn't caused the earth to stop spinning. If it would make you feel better I can throw some criticism at PunaOnline on PunaWeb. I know I will not get involved in a flame war between the sites. I have no desire to get involved in that and I won't.
