No bite or sting marks, and it was instant pain as I reached into the fern/grass to pull it. Nothing had time to bite, I think.

All it takes with nettle caterpillars is a slight brush against the poisonous hairs. You don't even always see them because they are drab gray color which blends in well with vegetation. They are particularly numerous around and in grass, palms, lilikoi, and some vegetables.

I went back out to that spot and started looking around, closely - there are some leaves in that area (not many) that look "chewed on" like they do in the link that was provided, earlier.

There are so many plants in Hawaii that can cause severe skin reactions
one website we came across just covers a few.

http://great-hikes.com/blog/poisonous-pl...-paradise/

Our son-in-law who is born in Hilo and should have known better, cut the leaves of the elephant ear plant, (about 1 month ago) the sap fell on his arm and leg and caused a burning skin reaction. He washed it thoroughly and used benadryl, hydrocortisone cream and ice packs, researched the web tried different methods that were recommended, but the rash spread over his body and then started on his face, extremely painful. Finally went to the doctor, who gave him the prescription Methylprednisolone. Took a while, but itching and rash cleared up, unfortunately it has left scars on his arms and legs.

I've been stung by nettles lots of times.

It resembles poison ivy on me but only lasts for 2-3 days

but I found that if I apply the Hydrocortisone right away it goes away in a day or two.

They are only about 1/4 inch long and hide on the underside of leaves.

One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.
