Know you don't care about Waikoloa weather, but he pulls together a lot of the radar, satellite, and other information in one place. http://home.roadrunner.com/~lanailizards...ummary.htm

Start making ice, God Forbid the BEER gets warm while you're sitting around with no power, no TV and no internet. I can taste that cowboy coffee now, rich and gritty. I've noticed that board games are most fun by lantern light too, probably just seems that way because there's nothing else to do []

NeeterLou, thanks for that link. I actually do have interest in Waikoloa weather (son lives there). The tracking image on the hurricane page is very clear.
On another note, here's an article where they interview my neighbor, Enrique, of California Hawaii Foliage Growers. He's waiting to hear whether there will be shipping issues. Now I know my neighbor is following closely! Felicia sounds serious. My main concern is the number of weak wood trees HELCO allows to grow around the power lines. I've talked to them before and they ignore my concerns. I suppose the only good thing is if the trees do fall down they will be gone. Bad thing is they could fall on my house. My house is in a clearing but the trees are tall and to the windward side. (They are all in the County and HELCO easement.) http://www.starbulletin.com/news/2009080...licia.html

It would be my guess that this will be stronger than many have anticipated. I would also guess it will run north and miss us mostly. There will be a lot of tree damage, likely.

My guess is the same but it'll change every 6 hours, usually just after 11am and 5pm each day. Some damage due to high surf is likely.

It's a good day to clean and repair the rain gutters. Also examine your ground water run off paths for debris or items which would inhibit water flow and cause back ups.
Once heavy rains start up it's tough to go out side and deal with it. I experienced the 29 inches in 24 hours here in Pahoa in 2000 and got to learn some things about my house site which sits in a high location. My garage was not as fortunate and I learned to make improvements in directing ground water. Today is a very good day to look these issues over. It's also a good day to check candle supplies and fuel up those kerosene lamps. Oh yeah, and if the rains get heavy by all means stay off the roads. Assume the best and ask questions. Rob,
If I'm not mistaken, that 2000 storm was the one that flooded highway 130 at the Hilo side of Shower Drive. (By the little bridge) Lower Puna was isolated for many hours. No ambulance or any other emergency service to Hilo. We need that alternate route, and people should be prepared for a couple of days on their own. That same spot on 130 has flooded twice, to my knowledge, in the last twenty years. When will it happen again? You just never know. punatoons

Greg,
Unfortunately twice in 20 years will not push the DOT to move any faster on a multi million dollar escape route for lower Puna. Their point will be “It only happened twice in 20 years”. And when you think about it for that short time until the highway clears we really aren’t without emergency services. We have a fire department in HPP and one in Pahoa and don’t for get about those pesky helicopters everyone complains about.
