HPP Robbery- Paradise and 8th on Friday

Thanks Jerry.

Absolutely! I would go bonkers. (Not that cats have any value to burglars, so one thing I'm not worried about.)

A laptop can have a lot of precious cargo - emails and photos. My DIL lost a good part of her baby/toddler pics of her son when someone stole her laptop at Isaac Hale, and those were irreplaceable other than what she had emailed to relatives.

I've been wondering if foreclosed homes are getting stripped and thought of it when you mentioned the catchment tanks and heavy stuff disappearing. That's all. Definitely not comparing the loss to this incident, was thinking of the impact on the economy when blighted homes sit around.

Kathy, these thieves are not stupid, they chose their targets well and probably staked it out too. I'm sure some are pros too. I have had my water pump stolen from two vacant houses and by the way they were stolen we could tell those were not random vandals but most likely plumbers or contractors. I also had construction material stolen from three sites, all three times they cut a trail through the lot behind mine. These kind of things clearly indicate pros.
I also had somebody brake into one of my new houses even though they could clearly see there was NOTHING inside. It cost me a new door. That was just pure vandalism.

Thank you for posting this concern. I miss Niki (Onikiniki)so much. He has very distinct markings with black and white spots on one side of his face and black on the other side. He has black floppy ears and a collar around his neck and is very sweet and friendly. PLEASE if anyone sees him, let me know. The other items stolen can be replaced, but Niki cannot. It is so sad to think that we live in a world where someone is heartless enough to take away a much loved member of my family.

So sorry, I didn't read the quotes before I posted. Niki is an Ausie or Border Collie mix, he is male, neutered and microchipped. I adopted him from the Humane Society and I have notified them. He has spots on his body as well. Do I just call the vets and shelters with is microchip number? Thank you all for your compassion and watchful eyes.

So sorry about your puppy. I don't know if vets scan chips. It's never been part of a vet visit for me. The Humane Society uses it to sort out the ferals and find owners of lost animals, not sure if it's good for anything else.

You adopted this puppy? Then he is not a purebred with papers? Sadly, that doesn't sound like a dog taken to sell, more like someone wanted a dog. Unless he was a valuable breed and just happened to be in the adoption pool.

John, your story amazes me. Cut a trail from the back lot? Wow, that is serious thievery.

Hey Totogirl,

Sorry to hear about your loss. If you have a pic of your pup then maybe posting on craigslist in the pet section to spread the word might help.

KathyH, one thing I've noticed about Hawaii is that everything is for sale here. Dogs that would be given away in front of a grocery store on the mainland (mutts) are sold for a couple hundred dollars here. I think the pup will turn up and be reunited, especially with being chip'd.

When a Vet takes in a new dog or cat they do regularly scan the animal's microchip for ID purposes, or at least they are supposed to. Unless the chip number has been reported missing, nothing would happen, it would just be recorded on the animal's records. They use a small gun that looks like a radar gun to get the information from the animals. Our vet in CA did it on our dogs so that they would also have a record of the chip numbers too. There was a friend of mine in CA who never registered her chip with contact information and when she lost her dog they were able to find her through the vet. We have not gone to the vet here yet so I have no idea how they operate here. As in many things it may be quite different than on the mainland.

Aussie/Border Collies are very intelligent dogs and they stand our here amongst the poi dogs, so you have a good chance of someone noticing him. Maybe the paper could even run a story if you find the right reporter, it is a great human interest story. Offer a reward and your chances of finding him increase further. Also if you can find him, you may also be close to finding your computer etc.

Totogirl, I would make "lost" posters of your dog with photos and take them to every vet & shelters, on both sides of the island. You could mail them to Kona/Kohala Give the microchip # as well as any other ID. There are many community bulletin boards where you can also put up a flyer. The more people that know about this the better. Even Walmart has a bulletin board in their pet department.

Kathy, even if the dog is purebred, without the actual AKC registration the dog is no more valuable than any other unless it is just someone who wants a specific breed and they do not care about papers. Many breeds have hereditary problems and for those that do, people want proof about soundness. Also, the dog cannot be shown or be used as brood stock without the papers.

Aloha au i Hawai`i,
devany

I know I've said this before and there are some people on this board that think it's cruel to adopt dogs just to make them watchdogs, but I had to do just that and no one bothers my house anymore with my big ol' fat Rottweiler guarding it. And in the process of adopting her out of fear of another dangerous person trying to break into my house, I have fallen in love with my watch dog. I can't imagine living here now without her protection. As for Niki - I'm sure they will try to sell her and I think that whoever buys her will want her for a pet more than a "watch dog" so she will end up for a vet visit.
