Gunshots heard all around HPP lastnight
#1
At around 8:30, I heard an automatic weapon go off six times behind my house on Hinahina 7th. I called the non--emergency number to report it,then turned on my police scanner online.
It appears that they started out on Beach road and then they went to 3RD St., then to 7th, then reports were made from 13th street too.

They were traveling around the neighborhood just shooting the gun. This is scary, considering that the bullets have to land somewhere. I haven't heard of any arrest yet. Did anyone else hear them or know if they caught them?
This happened about 2 months ago too. I sure hope they catch these crazy idiots soon, and I pray no ones gets hurt from the stray bullets.
Here is the link to the free online scanner. The non-emergency # 935-3311

It's actually better to talk to non-emergency than 911 for some situations. The 911 operator is trained to start getting info about a crisis and has a script to go through. The non-emerg person will instead talk to you about what's going on, listen to you, and then refer it to dispatch. If someone is in the house or you need an ambulance, then call 911. 911 should not be used for stuff like this because people reporting heart attacks and fires can't afford to be put on hold.

Oops, I forgot to say to whalesong that is totally scary! [:0]

I call the police without hesitation upon hearing gunfire. The way I see it, either someone is in a life threatening situation and firing legally, or commiting a criminal weapons violation. Either scenario merits police attention.

I've always dialed 911 in the past because I feel that gunfire in a neighborhood is a very serious matter, and calling the emergency number would get a faster police response.

Kathy makes some valid points and I guess I should rethink my response.

Whalesong; Are you sure it was an "automatic" weapon being fired? (like a machine gun?) If so, the indiscriminent nature of that type of weapon would merit an emergency call. I've only heard single shots or "semi" automatics going off.

Thanks Greg, a few more thoughts then. ;-)
my thinking is that for police only matters, the non emergency number takes you straight to someone who has authority in the police dept. The 911 operator is fielding medical emergencies, fire, AND crime. Obviously if you have knowledge that someone has been shot, 911 is the way to go, but in this case of overhearing gunshots, you aren't asking for paramedics to come, and they would not send them, without more to go on. What you want is the police. The dispatch person will triage the calls. Gunshots should rank as extremely serious.

This is freaking scary. Were the firing into the air? Do you know? We're seriously looking at lots in the area and this is most disconcerting!

"It appears that they started out on Beach road and then they went to 3RD St., then to 7th, then reports were made from 13th street too."

Well, it sounds like people are reporting it, so that's good news at least.

Roll the dice enough times and every combination will eventually come up.

If the shooters are not apprehended first then sooner or later either those bullets will find targets (intentionally or not -happens every year somewhere with idjits firing guns into the air at New Years) or they will start shooting outside a prepared household which will return fire. Probably returning the fire more soberly (that is, with more careful aim) and with a heavier caliber. Parents and grandparents with lil'uns inside take a dim view of gunfire at the night in front of the house.

If you morons shooting the guns at night are reading this thread, then wise up, sober up, and stop now before you either hurt someone or end up shredded. Either way you end in shame.

Discretion is the better part of valor.

You are right Steven... someone needs to stop these kooks. Even if they are shooting straight up, I have heard about bullets coming down on people.

A bullet fired into the air can climb up to two miles. When it falls back to earth, it can reach a speed of 300 to 700 feet per second.

At least 23 people were wounded by stray bullets during New Year's celebrations in Puerto Rico this year. Some islanders shoot guns into the air on New Year's Eve about midnight...
