Be aware of this stunt--one I learned to be widely applied during my term working in the justice system.
Very commonly especially in an area with a lot of grow sites people have a network of people whom--if worried that police are sniffing around their project will make a phone call and have a "friend" conveniently close by touch off a few rounds. Someone in the neighborhood invariably panics and calls 911, and the "cop bait" takes the the cops away to a more pressing project. It happens all the time and works very effectively. A lot of time rather than firearms people in the know keep a case of large lightbulbs around for just such circumstances, as one can "bait cop" without any risk of repercussions, as the sound of the big ones is very much like a handgun. Whoops, officer I dropped these lightbulbs.
Dumb kids don't often clean up the glass, so if you start to see a lot of busted lightbulbs around you'll get a clue as to what the stunt is.

This was gun fire, most likely a mid weight pistol like a 9mm.

But there is no need to spaz. You hear or see something call the cops. HPP is an Un-town of close to 10,000 people with minimal police presence, the more people get involved with neighborhood watch and the more pressure that put on the politicians to get more police involvement the better.
lets use this forum to let people know whats going on in there neighborhood. not use any excuse to start a gun debate and scare the cr*p out of everybody that lives or wants to move here

Agreed seeb. People shouldn't worry about reporting crime of any seriousness. Remember that all reports are logged and become a factor in determining future police and emergency allocations for our area.

Thank you, Seeb and Greg, for sensible posts. Our Community Policing Officer, Sandor Finkey, encourages us at Neighborhood Watch to report every single instance of crime, no matter how minor it may seem. Even "nuissance" issues like illegal ATV use and excessive noise should be reported because doing so not only creates a statistical imprint, but it lets people know that limits will be enforced. To put it another way, if criminals look around and see it's easy to get away with minor infractions, they don't worry as much about moving up the scale to the next level. One of the ways New York, NY went from being one of the worst crime cities to one of the best was the decision by the leaders and citizens to enforce every single law all the time, from littering and loitering on up.

I have been having some conversations with officials on related subjects and there is a feeling about that Puna has a lot of unreported crime. Or at least an unknown amount of unreported crime.
Without information on a percentage of crime it is hard to acquire the resources to deal with phantom issues. The impression is that Puna is under served by police. Whether this is accurate or not is a topic being researched. When verifiable data is available it will be shared.
If people are experiencing crime and not reporting it then, to a degree, they are themselves a part of the problem. Awareness must be increased. Reporting must be increased.
Assume the best and ask questions.

I guess I should mention a weird little incident that happened yesterday. I was at the stop sign of my street waiting to turn onto Paradise. There was a dark-colored old truck coming up Paradise. There was a boy and a girl sitting on a rock wall waiting for their parents or a bus near the stop sign. I see kids sitting there often. The truck sped by and as it passed and I was turning the truck let out a loud backfire. The boy clutched his chest and said "I'm hit!" Then the kids laughed. I hope it's this new truck running around backfiring, but I doubt it as I've heard gunfire in HPP many times over the last 20 years. But come to think of it I haven't heard gunfire for at least a couple of years near my street. I thought I should tell you about this because it's such a co-incidence that this happened on the same day this post was started.

Hmmm, to answer a question in here about how to tell the difference between semi-outo and full auto. If you've seen a Rambo movie with Stallone squeezing of an automatic machine gun then you know the sound of an automatic weapon. Of course you probably wouldn't quite get the "AHHHHHHHHHHH" that Stallone provides with the gun fire here in HPP.

Here's a youtube link to confirm (add your own yelling of AHHHHHHHHH during the watching of it for full Rambo effect).

For semi auto gunfire, watch a cop show on TV and if they don't have a revolver, last used by Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon, then it's the semi-auto, often used by Danny's partner, Mel Gibson.

Hmmmm, just curious, but does anyone remember what Leslie Nielson used in Naked Gun? I'd have to bet on the revolver.
Of course there's the greatest of them all, Clint Eastwood, asking how lucky do you feel

People who don't report a crime they have witnessed or are witnessing COULD be considered accessories. Something to think about.
100% of all fired bullets are fired "into the air", only things that vary are speed and angle.
100% of fired bullets have targets.
100% of all people killed by bullets are from bullets "fired into the air".

And 100% of backfires sound like gunshots
