OK Angela, now you've made me feel REALLY old.... Kibble was around WAY before the '70s, as that is what we fed our dogs in the 50's, & it wasn't even a new thing then...

ETA: we were in farm country & Purina was the food - grocery stores started carrying it in the late 50's:

i would NOT recommend buying "half a year's supply" of dog food in kona. dry dog food and treats sometimes will have bugs in them. we've found that to be the case a couple of times.

Hi Carey, Yes you're right, I checked my source and the quote was, "Mainstream in the early 60's" it doesn't actually say when kibble was created, but even with that, 50 years is just a tiny bleep in the big picture. Dogs have been around alot longer than that. My point was to just say that there are other choices, and to think outside the box. In these hard times, which I am personally struggling, I was happy to find a way to feed my dogs a healthy meal and save money at the same time. The health benefits I've seen come about because of it, just cement the validity for me of my choices. Smile Angela

Thank you,Carey,Nalu and Kani!

(Carey,I still think that you are ...you know..with wings.[Smile])

It's amazing that dog food is allowed in the airport.May be in the shipping container too?
Kani, the hard plastic of that dog food is airtight sealed and Trader Joe has them with almost a year before the expiration date.

Nalu,I am totally for cooking for dogs.
I used to argue with his "father" - would you eat cerial 24/7/365?

I'll check the book you recommended.Thank you!

Been hesitant to chime in, but what the heck..[Big Grin], being a boxer person these past 16 years and currently feeding 4 of them...

Besides visiting PW, I also visit a boxer forum. In addition to being boxer people, 2 other traits seem rampant of that forum:
1: It is well populated with food snobs.[8][8][8]
2: Many write about their boxer eating sensitivities and problems.[:0][:0][:0]

I personally think the two are related, just not in the fashion that would be popular there [Wink]
IMHO, Boxers as a breed are as healthy and hearty as most any purebred.

As for feeding ours, we switched to Costco's Kirkland Chicken, rice, & vegetables about 2 years ago. Everyone seems to be doing well on it. No ones ever been to the vet for anything food related. Over time, I have come to realize that products with significant corn meal resulted in a bigger aftermeal pickup.[V]

As for home cooking - basically our dogs eat what we eat plus their kibble to round it out. I don't believe in cooking special for them, but, for example, if Soph and I are having eggs and sausage for breakfast, they each get an egg and sausage as well. I do draw the line - they don't get to drink my beer and if I didn't ration their potato chips, I wouldn't get any. I wish they would learn to peel their own fruit. [^] I never snack off their raw bones we sometimes get them.

Note to SH: If you can get TJ to Kona, the Konifornians will canonize you. LOL

DM,SH wants TJ in Hilo (not Kona).

My boxer is not sensitive to any food.

sorry for misunderstanding. one of your posts said, "...I don't know who the storing food will work but I'll probably buy a half a year supply in Kona if I have to..."

on another note: with the opening of victoria's secret on o'ahu, it was reported by marissa yamane of channel 2 news, that while the consensus is that we would like to have trader joes and bath and body works in the islands, they do not have plans to come here. we'll see.

David you're hilarious! Funny you mentioned beer, our very mischievious english pointer, Pepper, will purposely knock over beers just to get to get to their contents, which my husband is none to happy about. Smile Angela

I can believe that Angela. My very 1st boxer loved beer whenever he could get it. I had a dentist friend that thought it funny to watch him drink right from the can or bottle. Our 2nd male really only liked it after it went flat. which doesn't make for a great drinking buddy. Ruby has never seemed to care for it. I've caught Kalani and Flash lick at the accidental spill and there's no doubt they could develop a taste. Pele is just too young. As much as I enjoy sharing a cold one with a friend, having 3 brew sucking partners that I'd have to serve and never have them get me one seems a bit one sided. Sad
