How many of you use Ubuntu...
#1
or any other Linux distro for that matter? The latest version is coming out next week, so if you don't know what it is check it out. I use it on my old laptop, alongside windows XP. I only use XP when I have too though. Its great to have so many windows management tools, like the different application switchers it has. Having multiple desktops is great too. The best thing about it is that its free. Most people don't know anything but windows, some don't even know what "operating system" means. If you're not happy with your Microsoft windows operating system, or want to experience a more modern operating system, try Ubuntu. Its great!

If you are really interested, just search youtube for "Ubuntu" and start watching. You'll think, "Hey why can't my computer do that?"

Yes, I use Ubuntu as well, and try too hook as many people up with it as I can. I have been trying Windows 7 but it will take a lot more to get me to spend $200 for the base version.

My husband discovered Ubuntu over the last couple years. He was in an Ubuntu discussion group online. I think he has switched back to Windows now.
I went Mac two years ago, and after almost 20 years of PC only, I haven't looked back. Happy Mac user, never had so little worry about my computer functionality.

I Love Mac too, Im actually writing this on a mac, however, Ubuntu IS WAY MORE FUN than anything else I have seen. I Dont want to dual boot my iMac with Linux. I would encourage everyone to find out what Linux (ubuntu) is and what its all about. You may find yourself addicted.

I dual boot between Ubuntu and Windows server 2003. I only use Windows for the most part to play games. I probably wouldn't even have Windows if I didn't get the server version free from Microsoft while I was taking classes at a community college. Since, I buy the computer kits that don't include an operating system and try to use old components to save money.

On my Eeepc netbook, I use Debian Squeeze due to it being a little lighter than Ubuntu. Though, it's a bit less user friendly in some cases.

Yeah I guess. Does it use GNOME?

Another Question:

Has anyone tried running a netbook OS like Moblin or Ubuntu Netbook remix on a larger laptop? I looked into it and the sys. requirements calls for an atom processor.

I tried both the Ubuntu NBR and Moblin on my netbook. Both were very usable, but I could never get use to the interface. I guess, I just prefer the normal desktop.

I tried pretty much every major Linux out there when I first got my laptop. I played with Mandriva, Fedora, EEEbuntu, Easy Peasy, Ubuntu, OpenSuSe, Debian, Puppy, PCLinuxOS, and Moblin.

In my case, the biggest problem was having a small solid state drive instead of a normal hard drive. Many of the default distro installs left me with little space left. Which is not a good thing considering you need a lot of free space for the SSD's wear leveling to prevent premature disk failures.

Some of the other distros like Puppy worked great and used little space, but were a little too stripped down for my tastes.

Which is why in the end, I did a custom install of Debian Lenny using the Debian eepc project installer. I later upgraded it to squeeze using the LXDE desktop.
