Does anyone know why the cbs affiliate kgmd isn't broadcasting cbs shows anymore? I only like about 2 shows and they both happen to be on cbs.

Good luck trying to find a customer service dept. to find your answer. 9.1 is now k5 and the channel k5 was on is now cbs and we can't pick it up with our box either.

It sucks. What happened is there was a merger. The news merged to Hawai'i News Now or something like that. In the process, KFVE ended up getting KGMB's prime broadcast frequency, and KGMB was relegated to an analog spot way up in the channels. (UHF?) I found it last Thursday, and I could hear the sound for Survivor while the picture was a frozen image of a woman on Jeopardy, that never moved (and a very poor image).

Man, no cbs, that means no Letterman or Ferguson for us sleepless folks, either. I know there our more important issues out there but when I do watch tv it is usually cbs. Anyone have any preferences to dish network or direct tv?

The Trib's take:
http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/arti...ocal04.txt All in all a crummy deal. The lame news offerings aside, it shows what the new conglomerate thinks of us antenna folks in outlying areas. KFVE is a poor substitute for the CBS affiliate, especially since it doesn't have Letterman.

We use dish and are pretty happy. Had a issue with rain, but got them back to re-aim the dish and all is well now. Do like to be able to record 2 channels at the same time. Their DVR does a nice job. Programming and fee's are better than Direct.

The change has really confused and angered me. I've managed to find KGMB/CBS again (channel 45 and it's a dreadful picture) but what used to be, in my opinion, the only decent local TV company has been replaced with utter brain-dead garbage.
I enjoyed watching the NFL on a Sunday morning on CBS and 60 Minutes later on. The only reality programme I've ever actually watched and enjoyed, The Amazing Race, was right after 60 Minutes. I'm no Letterman fan but I liked Ferguson. The local weather on the KGMB was also of a much higher quality than the other channels I think. The early morning show, I forget what it's called, was also quite good and fun to watch. The Star Bulletin had a little more information on the change, there's something about things changing in a couple of weeks or perhaps next year, but I don't know if that applies to the Big Island: http://www.starbulletin.com/business/200...grams.html Now it's scammy infomercials during the day and utter dross in the evening (although I like Family Guy!). I was hoping that at least they would show some NBC shows, Sunday night Football and the Office. Instead I get some game show about whether you're more intelligent than a fifth grader and I think that says it all. Oh well, that's progress I guess... Tom

Some very interesting shows are made for TV these days, on the cable networks, although even the major networks have some good offerings. I would never have imagined when Fox became the 4th major, that they'd come up with a show as great as HOUSE. A&E, FX, USA, TNT are offering programs that I think are worth watching. Mad Men is a fantastic show. HBO and Showtime have been forging the way for some time. None of these shows can be picked up with an antenna.
However, for the CBS shows, and many network shows now, the networks are putting them online. I don't care to watch TV on my computer monitor, but if your computer has a video port, and your TV is equipped, you can watch the online shows on your TV screen. You can also download via torrent if you don't have an ethical problem with it, and again, watch it on your TV. That said, it's real nice to have Time Warner if you can, but expensive, and not all of us can. I don't like the way Dish runs their business and contracts, but if it's the only game in town, there it is. btw, for those of you who have never tried Netflix, you can get all the best TV on DVD up to the last season, and watch it all in order. Say you don't have Showtime and you want to see Dexter or Weeds, or you want to see Lost from the beginning, or see the Sopranos again. It's not that expensive. Recently I discovered Monk, which I had never watched, wasn't even cognizant of the USA network. I am working my way through seven seasons that are on DVD via Netflix. Often times I only discover there's a quality show out there by watching the Emmy's, seeing someone get an Emmy and beat my favorites for some show I've never watched ... then I rent the show and see what all the fuss is about. Both Mad Men and Entourage I started watching to see why they were winning Emmy's. The Great Wasteland that Zappa mocked has come a long way. It used to be the great talent went into filmmaking, but honestly, the movies these days are 99% dreck, whereas the cable TV shows have the intelligent writing and character development, IMHO. |
