Sound-proofing Supplier

We are trying to find a local source of soundproofing material for our generator housing. Any suggestions for the Hilo area or Kona if we have to.

How big a building is it and how is it made?

Three walls are concrete block. The front and top are currently open. The OD of the building is 85" x 85". My plan is to build a roof, probably shed-style from plywood and insulate the inside surfaces with foam or some other sound proofing material. The front doors will also be insulated. I've seen some very pricey material on line, but was looking for a local source.

I have some containers coming in in about six weeks. Sometimes but not alawys the dunnage in the container will be blanks of dense foam about three to four inches thick. I always try to find uses for such things and have given the material to people in the past to sound attenuate a band practice space for example.

If you can be patient I may have what you need for free sometime soon. Can't guarantee it though. If you are in a hurry then press on by all means. If all you need is a 7'x7' area to deal with (roof) then I may have some now.

Rob, thanks so much for the offer. We would be very willing to come over and pick up what ever you have.

Sound from the generator (which has been in place for nearly a year) has not been an issue of which we were aware. I returned to the mainland last February to sell our place and just recently arrived for good. We have much closer neighbors who had never complained, but shortly after moving in week before last, one neighbor has become very vocal about the noise. His place is about 600' from our generator, with a thick Ohia forest between us. Our house is about 80' from the unit and the noise doesn't bother us at all. We tested the noise level about 20' from the generator- about 65 db. At the house, it's less than 50 db.

All this explained, we are willing to do anything to keep the peace in our new neighborhood if at all possible. Please send me an email or you can call: 408-230-9013 and we can pick up what ever you can share.

Thanks again, Ralph

Yeah, good thinking. Keep peace if you can.

Let me know precisely what you need. If I have it on hand I will give it to you.

I have some pieces about about. Probaly not 84" long though....more like 60" and would have to be pieced together somehow.

If the foam is in the Styrofoam genre, we have a hot wire unit for making clean cuts with no fly-away foam edges that you can use

This foam should cut with a hot wire but it is not EPS.

Rob, anything would help at this point. We'll need about 120 sq ft for all of the surfaces. I can piece together partial sections, and with Carey's offer, this should be much easier and certainly less messy. Let me know when we could come by.

Carey, are the palms baby's still available? We could pick them up any time as well as the hot-wire cutter.

Let me know what is convenient for both of you.

most of the noise from a generator is from the exhaust ( think of a modern car much more hp but almost no noise ). Use some exhaust flex pipe to hook your gen to a real muffler
