Time to pick out kitchen cabinets
#1
Any adivice on where to get the biggest bang for my buck. I'd really like white bead board style doors for a seaside look. I know I can't use partical board materials here on the island. I do not have an unlimited budget. So far checked Lowes and Home Depot. Any advice?

SandyS- After geting bids from Lowes & H.D., go to the nearest coustom cabinet shop They may need the busniss and be flexable on the price. Be sure to cover every detail, hardware, materials, finish, installation ,timeing, drware bottoms, backs, toe kicks, ect. And no partical board, M.D.F., hard board, melemien, any where.

I'd rather be fishing "WITH BAIT"
Give me liberty and give me BAIT

Thanks Mr. Bill and Royall. I am waiting to get an estimate from a cabinet maker on island. If that doesn't work out I'll call you, Royall. I did not get your message.

We bought our cabinets from a supplier up the coast from Hilo. Had
to assemble but they were very nice.

Sandy,I wanted white cabinets too.
According to my builder they were almost $2500 more than the brown ones.
I found about it after the fact, when he already installed them.
So he "saved" on a lot of other stuff.
The brand is Huntwood.

Stillhope, the experiences you have told us about makes me glad we are able to be on island while our cottage is being built. I would have been very unhappy if my builder had surprised me with brands and colors that I had not agreed to purchasing. Having helped my hubby with some woodworking projects I can't understand why white wood should cost more. Geting a nice smooth finish on a woodgrain finish was always more difficult for us than a coat of paint.

I don't understand why the white ones cost more either.

There are some cabinet makers in shipman biz park, they are of good quality, better than most here. HPM's cabinets are usually good quality though they seem to change vendors a lot. They might be competitive b/c biz is way down for them. There are several cabinet makers on island and in my community here. You may be happier with the quality and customization of a product made here, availability of woods is greatly improving and if you were to buy hardware online, you could easily have a better competetively priced product than something from HD. I have installed many HD cabinets and they are generally a fine but unexciting product. They also have high turnover so sometimes things get messed up in ordering or delivery, though my last experience with them was very good.

Hope that helps. Tell me if you want me to talk to some of my neighbors about building cabinets for you. One is an instrument and cabinet maker and the other does furniture and cabinets, he has stuff in the Met. Museum of Art.

I'll be building our own cabinets. That said, I'm all for hiring a local woodworker and keeping the money in Hawaii if I wasn't building my own!
