Pre-planning ways to really diminish all metal roof noises would be to not have a metal roof, or go with a very heavy roof deck (some of the very quiet systems I have seen here use a roof deck of T&G 2x4's , 3/4 plywood, then the roofing metal... this is a very heavy & $$$ way to go, but it is pretty quiet....)
This is also way too much load, and cost - you can achieve the same sound attenuation with bat insulation if you have an attic at a lower cost and dead load.
SH - is your ceiling open beam or sheet rock? For new construction if you use 5/8" sheet rock on the ceiling you get more sound deadening.
Breaking up the sound waves with an uneven surface is a good way to dampen the sound.
I am only a amateur - the person we need here is Jerry M who did sound systems before he retired and has the ear!

Wow, Carey. Great extended elephant metaphor!
StillHope: Don't make me come over there with a needleful of Demoral. You are as jumpy as I was right before (and after escrow). Make a list of the things that you suspect may be awry (not quite right) at the home, and then have a conversation about those with the right person.
Might I suggest another behavior? Works well!
Perhaps a list on the refer of the things that are good, pleasant, beautifully mind blowing, and working correctly, P traps and all would be a good positive exercise.
Focusing on that positive list of what is good and right with the world one eats, sleeps and lives in, is very healing, positive, and feeds good thoughts, deeds and actions. The beautiful list is like yeast rising for a loaf of bread. Well it works for me most of the time!
Happy New Year Everyone.
A hui hou too!

Mella,
How does that correct those things that are incorrect? Sure we can PLAY positive and say WOW my windows work well while our roof leaks and mold grows in our ceiling. What happens when reality inevitably falls on your head? That DOESN'T work so well.
If you want to expose yourself to positive thinking, then think about how addressing problems keeps people happy in the long run. You can’t run from issues that need to be addressed, that's simply living in denial and I “ain't” talking about a river in Egypt.
E ho'a'o no i pau kuhihewa.
