Lauren, depending on where in Pahoa, the HeleOn county run FREE bus system may be a great assist on you vacation... link to the site:

The Hilo/Keaukaha bus meshes nicely with the Pahoa route at the Prince Kuhio Mall for travel to the Hilo beach parks. If you want to take a bike on the bus bike racks it is $1 per ride. The only big problem is that the routes are slightly limiting (the HeleOn bus does not run on any private roads, and much of the island housing is in private subdivisions, do the bus is not convenient for those...)
Anyhoo, it is worth checking into, if the bus does run nearby, you can always rent a car for a couple of days to see the 'must see' things that are not on the bus route... (oh, you may be having a real hard time finding a car for April, because the Merrie Monarch Festival is the first week, after that, things like cars become a little more available.
