I think it is cheaper to build yourself, based on my own experience of building 2 houses that I currently own. But it is extremely labor intensive and frustrating if you dont know what you are doing.
Contact me directly and I can draw you some house plans. I do not think that the packaged homes are any good in quality and especially price. I designed a home for a client, and then my contractor friend bid it out. It was cheaper to design, build, and she got a house about 15% larger then what she was looking at for the same price.
I think the going rate for construction is approximately $85 per square foot, just to let you know to factor that in to your cost.
I have references for a lot of licensed contractors, and I design homes for a living.
