Asly, this is not a weird question. Unlike most of Puna, I am not on rock... I have 13 feet of deep rich red clay soil. It was a cattle ranch for 25 years, then sat fallow for 15, then I bought it 6 years ago. So the auger digs a hole a bit under 12 inches wide. I am loosening soil for two feet for the roots benefit. Then we just put the soil back into the hole, cover it in mulch that I have been brewing for 6 or 8 months and then you pop the pineapple into the middle of the hole only about 2 inches. I had a flattened area grated by a big old machine last year so it is packed hard and tight. In most of Puna I imagine the pineapples would be grown in cinder/soil and maybe even in raised beds. No auger for that for sure!
Hope that helps.... Pam
I want to be the kind of woman that, when my feet
hit the floor each morning, the devil says
"Oh Crap, She's up!"
