It is a rough hike in spots, but about an hour after I arrived, a little boy of 10 showed up with his father. The boy was wearing flip-flops and was none the worse for wear.
However, you may have to engage with the occupants of the homes overlooking the lagoons with their inexplicably patrician accents. Think Katherine Hepuburn in Philadelphia story, except in a stretchy royal blue one piece swimming suit. She thinks that Puna is a no man's land, redeemed only by certain vaguely artistic aspects. I was thinking to myself "Don't you live in Puna?" but I thought the question might cause an unseen china tea cup to overturn somewhere and so did not pose it.
The hike will do you good (if I can do it, nearly anyone can) and has got to be good for an explorer scout badge.
