The "Big Island Revealed" guide book has great info about the Volcano Park..well worth picking up a copy before you head out. And the night view is always worth checking out. Surprisingly enough, my then-teenagers loved the zoo also. They're girls, but they tended to be cynical, so if they liked it, the guys might too.
BTW, I bet they'd hike down the trail to Kehena Beach
