When we lived by Kehena what I observed there was that the weekdays were very tame with fairly ittle nudity and open drug use, and the weekdays attracted big crowds with more of everything. That can be a dangerous beach at times, be very careful when getting out of the water especially, those waves can flatten you from behind.
The recent death at the Verna's beach was a very experienced boogie boarder who went in there often, I don't think it is swimmer safe at this time. As more black sand is deposited by the lava ocean entry that may change.
