The Census can be used to infer about the number of committed gay couples and it has been used to do this in the past. In stating who you live with you put each person's sex and your relationship to them. It was pretty clear from how I filled mine out that my partner and I would be "counted" as a same sex couple home when that is looked at. There is a publication on it here:
