The military engages in live fires and contamination from DU spreads all over the island, particularly Kona area. Do a search for DU (depleted uranium) poisoning. Personally, I wouldn't trade clean air for any amount of money.
It was my understanding that the DU rounds were phased out for training. The only things that use them are large caliber (tank sized) guns. I'll have to call a friend and check.
As a whole, infantry are not equipped with DU rounds. That begins at direct fire support and up. Ie tanks and oa-10 aircraft. (strykers count as tanks for sake of argument. )
