It was still so insanely busy at 3:30 yesterday they ran out of carts, it took 2 hours to do half an hours worth of shopping because the check out lines were so long they stretched to the ends of the inside aisles. We saved about $30 on a $120 cart. Many people were there for specific coupon items (cases of spam were a big hit) and the samples were still very popular. Pros: nice wide aisles, way more choices, greater selection of the O organics line, beautiful produce section, the deli section looks good too. Cons: many prices are still WAY high compared to other stores, all prices are very high if you don't do the Safeway card, the produce is still mostly imported from the mainland and is consistently over treated with that oily waxy stuff used to prolong shelf life (that stuff is nasty and hard to get off), nobody working in the store knows where things are yet, and the meats are still all packed for large families.
I think when things all shake out people will still pick up certain things at different stores based on price differences. Safeway will get extra business from the deli/hot food counters, but shoppers will need to be careful about what else they pick up while they are there, because some of Safeway's prices are so high.
