I've attended ticket in hand in the past and found that the crowd thins down midway into the show no matter how excellent it is. One year I was watching it live on TV and noticed all the empty seats... so I just went down and found that at least at the mid point of the evening the gates were open, I just walked in found a seat and enjoyed the second half. Done this a couple times.
Being there live is worth the experience. Having done that the fact is that the live camera coverage on television is actually very, very good... not looking over someone's head from a static point of view. Some of the overhead camera shots definitely expand the view.
But the ambiance, the chants, the music, the overall is such an experience I recommend to be there sometime in person anyway you can.
