Wastewater spills at Hawaii County treatment plant

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
HILO, Hawaii -- Hawaii County wastewater officials say a malfunctioning pump led to the discharge of 7,600 gallons of wastewater into the ocean.

The accident occurred Tuesday at the Papaikou Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald (http://bit.ly/16prEvH) reports shoreline near the plant's outfall was closed as a precaution.

Wastewater Division head Dora Beck says wastewater is chlorinated and therefore disinfected and not harmful to the public. Ocean waters were not tested.

Beck says signs were posted and the shoreline closed as a precaution and to meet federal discharge requirements.

The shoreline was reopened Wednesday.
