Yes, the issue isn't the cost of the airfare - as you noted it is close to the current cost of a 1986 inter-island ticket adjusted for inflation.
The problem is our wages have not grown to meet to gas, housing, and tax costs so there is less disposable income overall in 2011 than in 1986. And not many people delay purchase of their I-phone to fly inter-island instead if the choice had to be made between one or the other.
That said, HI Air is running a ton of specials right now from Hawaii to the mainland.
