I suggest you start with a broker who will get quotes from a range of insurers, plus get quotes from the majors -- Allstate (Alan Oda), State Farm ...
I use Pyramid now, haven't seen the necessity to switch. I have used Allstate and when I first came we used Aloha, but then our broker moved to Allstate.
Pyramid is supposedly not the cheapest but has good service.
ericlp, why take out insurance if you own the home? Um, to have your liability covered, to replace home and contents if you have a fire, wind downs a tree on you, vandals destroy stuff, theft, etc.. ...
Hurricane insurance I likely would not have if I didn't have a lender making me.
I've only ever filed one insurance claim, but I was glad we had it. A neighbor's fire spread to our house and did some damage. Even with the fire department putting it out before it got going on our house, it was surprising how expensive the damage was. Heat-cracked windows, smoke damage ...
It is also good to have insurance against damage other people do. Like when the neighbor's contractor accidentally destroyed our driveway and it had to be replaced. Ouch! Far better to have an insurance company go after the contractor than to try to pursue getting compensated on your own, as you will have to hire an attorney and you know what that costs.
I would never own a home without carrying insurance, and I would never again want to rent without insuring my possessions. But when I was young, i was never insured.
Then our house burned down ... I tell you, it is bad to lose everything when you are insured, but losing everything with NO insurance coverage really sucks and it took years to recover from that.
